From the Annals of 1958

Elizabeth Head was elected treasurer of her sophomore class at Mt. Saint DeSales Academy for Girls in Macon. She graduated from Sacred Heart School in Griffin in 1956. She attended Griffin High School her freshman year.

Barnesville’s Peggy Pavy, 17, from, was crowned Miss Industry of 1958 in a pageant as part of the fifth annual Butts County Industrial Day.

A Lamar grand jury recommended that the county commissioners call for a referendum to let voters decide whether beer should be sold in the county.

State Civil Defense authorities designated Griffin as one of six reception areas in the state which would be used in the event of an attack or in case of some other disaster.

Patricia Anne MacKendree, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bowdre MacKendree, graduated from Crawford W. Long School of Nursing. She graduated from Griffin High School in 1955.

Curt Pressly and Shirley Bowden were the top bowlers in the Mixed Summer Bowling League. Pressly rolled a 257 game and a 685 series. Bowden bowled a 224 game and 549 series.

Griffin Country Club’s Catherine Carlisle won the championship flight in the 35th annual Mid-Georgia Women’s Golf Association Tournament.

A live black rat snake was the center of attention at the first special program of the Vacation Reading Club at the Flint River Library. Reynolds Nature Preserve’s Dawn Jordan brought this snake and several stuffed ones, plus a shedded snake skin, and talked about reptiles found in Georgia.

Ellen and Keith Brewer won a Caribbean trip that the North Griffin Business Association and Thomas Travel Agency offered during a promotion. The Hampton couple received the trip check from Belk’s Diane Pitts and Thomas Travel’s Carol Carlisle.

Griffin Fire Department firefighter John Hamilton completed a training program in pressurized-container fire control at the Georgia Fire Academy Division of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Jason D. Johnson graduated from the airborne mission system specialist course at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss., with subsequent training at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. Johnson was the son of Mary M. and Warren M. King of Griffin. He was gradudated from Griffin High in 1997.

A group of Griffin residents took a trip back in time as they recreated a special dining experience. They took part in a luncheon featuring recipes from the cookbook of a famous Atlanta restaurant - The Frances Virginia Tea Room.

Griffin High senior Dustin Danner signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Georgia Southern. He was the son of George and Dale Danner.

Griffin High senior Brantley Spillman signed a letter of intent to play soccer at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He was the son of Bob and Bobbie Sue Spillman.

Fred Crawford, 70, along with Charles Mote, 80, took up shuffleboard in 2002. Despite limited experience, the Griffin residents won the doubles title at the Georgia Golden Olympics in September,and had a respectable performance at the 2003 National Senior Games in Newport News, Va. earlier in the month.

Terry and Lisa Dunn presented $3,120 donated in the name of their daughter, Danielle, to Sara Alderfer of the AFLAC Cancer Center of Children’s Healthcare Of Atlanta at Egleston. The money was raised thanks to golfers and sponsors of the Danielle Dunn Memorial Golf Tournament.

Orrs Elementary school students, as well as Spalding County middle and high school students, played in the annual Special Olympics Softball Tournament at Volunteer Park. Students enjoyed food, fun and all were awarded trophies at the end of the tournament.

The James S. Boynton Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, held a luncheon meeting at the Bailey-Tebault House. Chapter Secretary-Treasurer Marsha Shockley presented the book, “Confederate Flags in the Georgia State Capitol Collections,” to Griffin Historical Society executive director Sheryl O’Brien. The UDC Chapters sold the books to help restore the flags.

More than 100 people lined up along East Solomon Street seeking help with utility bills being offered by Calvary Life Tabernacle.

Jackson Road Elementary School fifth graders visited The Woods Assisted Living with their music teacher Vickie Capel, P.E. teacher Andrea Woodroof, Instructional Lead Teacher Melinda Owens and Principal Sara Jones.

Second-graders in Karen Thompson’s class at Beaverbrook Elementary School constructed bar graphs and pictographs that showed the number of votes each gubernatorial candidate received during a mock election.

Sunny Side United Methodist Church, on old Atlanta Road, “burned” the note on its education building. The church was one of the oldest churches in Spalding County.

Dorothy Carter presented a program on Longaberger Baskets and Primerica to the members of the Iris Charter Chapter ABWA for their October meeting.
