From the Annals of 1909

Misses Mittie and Hettie Carson, of Commerce, arrived in the city and were guests of their brother, Dr. M.F. Carson, and family, on College Street.

Our esteemed fellow citizen, Bailey Fowler, who had made a handsome fortune, estimated at various amounts, from the rise in the price of cotton, left to spend his summer vacation in North Carolina. He had severed his connection with the Griffin Mills and his future plans were not definitely determined.

Mr. and Mrs. John Jones and daughter, of Rome, and Miss Willie B. Thompson and Miss Maggie Byrd, of Atlanta, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Woodruff at their home on South Sixth Street.

Mr. Lee Dearing, the mail carrier on Rural Rt. 5 out from Griffin, was happily married to Miss Essie Smith, a charming and popular young lady of Hampton. They had the best wishes and hearty congratulations of their many friends.

State revenue agents and Spalding Sheriff’s officials confiscated 69 gallons of illegal whiskey near Rover. The “moonshine” was destroyed. Revenue agents said the whiskey was not found at a still, but had been hidden in a silo at Rover.

Officials of Highland Baptist Church attended ground-breaking ceremonies, officially beginning construction of a new church pastorium. Attending were J.V. Parker, Chairman of the Building Committee; Earl LaPrade; W.J. Moore; Wesley Brown, Chairman of Deacons; J.R. Childs Sr., Trustee; the Rev. I.F. Barnette, Associate Missionary; and the Rev. Woodrow Hart, pastor.

Lawrence Howard Olson was presented the Eagle Scout Award in Scouting at the First Baptist Church. He was a member of Explorer Post 79. Olson is the son of Mrs. L.C. Olson and the late Dr. Larry Olson of the Ga. Experiment Station.

The Parker-Steele VFW Auxiliary of Hampton entered Dianne Morris in the Queen Contest at the annual VFW Marble Tournament held in Moultrie. Miss Morris is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Morris of Hampton. She is an eighth grade student at Hampton Elementary School.

Griffin High School golf coach Kerry Phillips was named Golf Coach of the Year in Region 6-AAAA. He was chosen for the honor by his fellow coaches in the region. Phillips, a 1967 graduate of Griffin High School, is a graduate of Tennessee Tech University.

Mrs. Claire Crouch presented a scrapbook of newspaper clippings and other publications which highlighted the 1984-84 school year to the Griffin-Spalding School Board. She put it together from material which Judy Byrd of the school administration kept throughout the year.

Courtney Reynolds, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. K.H. Reynolds of Griffin, completed an internship in the Washington office of U.S. Sen. Matt Mattingly (R-GA). Miss Reynolds was a student at Vanderbilt University majoring in mechanical engineering. She is a graduate of Griffin High School.

Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Jackson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a dinner at their home in Experiment. The dinner was given by their children Ronnie and Marlene Jackson, Pat Pledger, Don and Linda Jackson.

Marine Pfc. Michael K. Eason, son of Tony and Rebecca Eason of Hampton, completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Eason is a 1996 graduate of Eagles Landing High School.

Marine Pfc. Joseph M. Senger, son of Joseph M. and JoAnne Senger of McDonough, completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Paris Island, S.C. Senger is a 1998 graduate of Eagles Landing High School.

West Point Cadet David J. Crawford, son of James and Ellen Crawford of Griffin, received the Silver Star at the U.S. Military Academy. Crawford is a 1998 graduate of Griffin High School. He planned to graduate from West Point in 2002 and be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Army Pvt. Cyrus J. Wilson entered basic military training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Wilson is the son of Loretta T. and Michael Wilson of Griffin. He is a 1999 graduate of Pike County High School.

Charles M. Jones, owner, presented employee Darwin Williamson an award at a dinner given in his honor. Williamson had logged 20 years of service as manager of Jones Harrison Furniture Co., Inc.

Harlem Globetrotter for 11 years Tyrone “Hollywood” Brown visited Crescent Elementary School students to speak about exemplifying good character traits in their everyday lives and striving to reach their goals. Brown wrapped up his visit by demonstrating some of his Globetrotter moves and techniques.

Gorgeous weather graced West Central Georgia for the seventh annual Tour de Pike as about 400 bicyclists and in-line skaters participated in the fundraiser sponsored by the Pike Co. Kiwanis Club.

Members of the Griffin Moose Lodge generated $7,351 for the Spalding County Sheriff’s Departments Junior Deputy program. The money as to benefit the Junior Deputy’s annual Washington, D.C. trip.
