Chief of Police Phelps was instructed to vigorously enforce the city ordinance against tying cows on the streets.

Rev. G.W. Wood spent a few days in Macon attending the graduating exercises at Mercer University, G.W. Wood Jr., of this place, was a member of the graduating class but remained at Mercer as the editor of the Mercerian and a student of the law class.

Master W.D. Carden entertained a number of his little friends at his home on Eighth Street in celebration of his fourth birthday. Delicious cream and cake were served and the occasion was highly enjoyed by all present.

Rev. C.M. Ledbetter, of the South Georgia Conference, reached Griffin as the guest of T.H. Wynne. Mr. Ledbetter was assistant superintendent of the Georgia Anti-Saloon League, and was in this part of the state for the purpose of making addresses on this subject.

Army Pvt. Frank M. Jones, son of Mrs. Lucille Jones of Griffin, was assigned to the 299th Engineer Battalion in Germany.

Navy Seaman Charles F. Killingsworth, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Killingsworth of Experiment, was aboard the destroyer USS Floyd B. Parks, took part in an amphibious landing exercise held on the beaches of Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Tommy Joe Morgan, of Griffin, was inducted into the Army and was stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Leonard Ray Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Brown of Experiment, enlisted for three years in the Army. Brown is a graduate of Griffin High School and prior to enlisting was employed by Head’s Cabinet Shop in Griffin.

Sgt. Gregory E. Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Harris of Griffin, was selected for promotion to Staff Sgt. while stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C. Harris joined the Air Force in 1981.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class John M. Richardson, son of Earnee V. and Joseph T. Richardson Sr. of Stockbridge, returned from a two-month training cruise to the Caribbean Sea. He was a crewmember aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Sampson, homeported in Mayport, Fla.

Capt. William M. Alexander, son of Clifford and Aline Alexander of Barnesville, completed an armor officer advanced course at the U.S. Army Armor School, Ft. Knox, Ky.

Army Pvt. Robert G. Wiggins, grandson of Ronald and Hester Wiggins of Hampton, completed basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C.

Jessica Leah Schmidt, daughter of Larry and Tammy Schmidt of Griffin, was named to the fall quarter dean’s list at LaGrange College.

Alan Wayne Stanfield of Griffin graduated from Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. He was among 153 other graduates in the class. He graduated with a bachelor of science in business. He is the son of John and Joyce Stanfield.

Teddy R. Horne of Griffin graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics. He was employed by Comair in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the son of Elwood and Freda Horne.

Three Griffin-Spalding County School principals, Sheila Mincey, Derrell Jeffcoat and Dianne Isaacs were among 17 principals from six counties to participate in professional development training at Macon State College’s Educational Technology Center. The session was titled Evaluation of Teachers in a Technology-Connected Classroom.

Monroe Academy competed in its first Academic Bowl meet of the season. The competition was held at Macon State College. Monroe Academy won third place overall against the other private schools. Members who competed in the meet included Katherine Dodd, Nelson Hearn, Krissy Milam, Jennifer Paul and Rick White.

Marine Corps Pvt. Michael D. Hammond, son of David M. Hammond of Griffin, completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Hammond is a 2003 graduate of Spalding High School.

Wayne and Anita Allen celebrated their 15th anniversary. They are the parents of Debra and Danny Failey and Jessica Allen. The couple were married at the bride’s parents house.

STAR student Bryce Phillips and STAR teacher Nancy Gresham worked on Griffin High School’s production “Little Shop of Horrors,” at Main Street Players. Phillips had been involved with drama for three years. “It lets me experience the world through someone else’s eyes,” he said.
