From the Annals of 1909

Rev. A.E. Sansburn, of Newnan, was in the city on the way to Macon to attend the Grand Chapter, R.A.M. Mr. Sansburn, who was a former well-known Griffin man, was grand chaplain of the grand chapter.

R.J. Mays, of Brooks, was operated on here by Drs. N.B. and T.E. Drewry and N.W. Gable for the removal of a tumor. Mr. Mays stood the operation heroically and his friends hoped to see him entirely recovered in a short time.

Prof. J.O.A. Miller, Judge B.D. Brewster, County Commissioner Barfield and Jack L. Patterson were among those who came down from Sunny Side to attend Memorial Day exercises.

E.H. Davis, of this city, was appointed consulting engineer for the city of Ashburn, Ga., by the wide-awake authorities of that hustling place.

Dr. J.L. Gable, of Brooks, was in the city on the way to Macon to attend the Masonic meeting. Dr. Gable was one of the most prominent Mason in the state, being past grand high priest and having held other important positions in the order.

Johnnie A. Buffington, employed as an electrician in the Depot Facilities Division, Atlanta General Depot was presented an Outstanding Performance Award and a Sustained Superior Performance Award in recognition of his exceptional job performance at the Depot. Buffington was a World War II veteran, having served two years in the Navy. He and his wife, Carolyn, resided in Griffin.

Pvt. Howard W. McDaniel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred D. McDaniel of Meansville, Ga., was assigned to Company C, 9th Battalion, 2nd Training Regiment at Fort Jackson, S.C., for eight weeks of basic combat training.

Navy Apprentice Petty Officer 2nd Class Charles M. Michael, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Michael of Griffin, graduated from Recruit Training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif.

Marine Pfc. Guyles Nolan, son of Mrs. Blondene Nolan of Griffin, and Sgt. William L. Wilde, son of Clifford A. Wilde of Griffin, took part in the 18th anniversary celebration of the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Pvt. Roy D. Maddox, son of Virginia Arnold and stepson of Jerry Arnold of Hampton, completed one station unit training at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Ft. Benning, Ga.

John S. Weldon, son of Margaret S. Weldon of Griffin, received a commission as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. Weldon was scheduled to begin a residency program in internal medicine at Keesler Air Force Base Medical Center, Miss.

Rufus McDowell Jr. son of Ruby L. Parks of Griffin, was promoted in the U.S. Army to the rank of staff sargeant. McDowell was a dental specialist at Ft. Bragg, N.C. His wife, Jacquelyn, is the daughter of Willie A. and Genie Brown of Griffin.

Airman James H. Tonkin, son of William J. and Margret A. Tonkin of Hampton, was assigned to Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. after completing Air Force basic training.

Jim Hall and Virginia Thompson Hall of Griffin celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. They have three sons — Jim Jr., Steve and Eddie, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren, all of Columbus.

Calvin and Octaria Odom celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary with an evening out wining and dining. They have two children, Rashad Odom and Latasha Odom. The couple were married at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. Horace Fuller Jr.

Robert (Bob) Ward and Amy Williams Ward celebrated their first wedding anniversary with a private weekend away by themselves. The couple’s children are Brianna Hunnicutt and Alexis Ward.

Franklin Watson and Judy Harris Watson celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. The couple have a daughter, Shaina. They were married at North Griffin Congregational Holiness Church.

J.R. (Jet Russell) and Bill Wages were presented with the Fairman of the Year Award, 1997 for Russell and 2004 for Bill Wages by the Georgia Association of Agricultural Fairs at the 92nd Annual Fair Convention.

Cora Pursley deposited a wagon filled with the coins at the United Bank of Griffin’s annual Piggy Bank Day. She won a $50 savings bond for depositing the largest amount of coins. Dustin Shane Maddox II, 5 months, won a $50 savings bond for being the youngest depositor. Madelyn Carroll won the raffle drawing of a Radio Flyer wagon filled with games.

Wilson J. and Marlene Maxwell Woodham celebrated their 50th anniversary. They were married in the Church of God in Griffin by the Rev. John Moore. They are the parents of a daughter, Deborah, the wife of Bill Middleton; and a son,Timothy Woodham, husband of Valerie.

Frederick and Chaquida Farley celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Ikeria and Keumbra. The couple were married at Oak Grove Church. They celebrated with a dinner and an anniversary party.
