From the Annals of 1909

Mrs. John McIntosh Kell, of Sunny Side, was the guest several days of Mr. and Mrs. Hendley V. Kell and was the honor guest at a lovely dinner given by Mr. and Mrs. Kell, to which all members of the family were invited. Among other charming attentions shown Mrs. Kell was the dinner party given in her honor by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Davis.

Mrs. Roswell H. Drake was in Washington, D.C. She was a delegate from Pulaski Chapter to the D.A.R. Convention, and was the guest of her sister, Mrs. Judson Davis Cobb.

Mrs. Joseph Mangham and Mrs. John Mangham were the honor guests at a beautiful luncheon in Atlanta given by Mrs. Howard Bucknell. A large bowl of pink Duchess roses was the central decoration for the oval table, which was covered with a snowy satin damask cloth embroidered in tufted roses with an exquisite deep border of embroidered roses.

Mr. Joe Thorn Holland, of Atlanta, arrived in the city and spent several days with his mother, Mrs. Frank Holland.

Misses Loretta and Peggy Berry were entertained with a birthday party given by their mother, Mrs. J.N. Berry, of Experiment. Guests included several friends and relatives and members of the Supreme Forest Woodmen Circle Grove 230, of which Mrs. Berry and her daughters were members.

Billy Royal, a well- known rock ‘n’ roll singer, appeared with his group on the stage of the Imperial Theatre for a big rock ‘n’ roll jamboree. This was one of the biggest rock ‘n’ roll shows to have ever played this part of the country.

Pvt. Billy A. Harris, son of Mrs. Mildred Goen of Griffin, was assigned to Ft. Jackson, S.C. for Army basic training.

Pvt. Thomas Jerry Williams graduated with the 1st Battalion, Company C, Platoon 1018, U.S. Marine Corps at Paris Island, S.C. He was assigned to Camp LeJeune, N.C. for advanced training. Williams is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Williams of Griffin.

Central Lake Church of God on High Falls Road was recognized as having North Georgia’s fastest growing family training hour. The church was also recognized for its Sunday School average attendance of 649 for April.

James Johnston, Griffin High yearbook advisor and also French and Humanities teacher, was selected as a national yearbook judge for the National Scholastic Press Association, Minneapolis, Minn.

Mr. and Mrs. Reno Pulliam celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at the Oak Hill Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. The reception in their honor was given by their children, Muriel and Charles R. Horton.

Newton K. Galloway retired after 24 years with the county. He was in charge of the signs detail at the Spalding County Correctional Institute.

Sally Jacob was selected by audition to participate in the Valpraiso University Chorale, a select concert and touring choir of 50 voices. Jacobs was a music major in the College of Arts and Sciences. The graduate of Griffin High School is the daughter of Randal and Susan Jacob.

The following area residents completed requirements summer semester for a degree from Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville: Jeffery D. Petty of Griffin earned a bachelor of science in criminal justice; Nancy S. House of Griffin earned a master of art in teaching, secondary education.

Billy and Betty Jimmerson celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary. Their children are Vicky and Allen Skelton, and Starlett and Monty Ellis.

Nakia and Tonya Hampton Lowry celebrated their second wedding anniversary with a trip to the mountains for the weekend. The couple were married at Teamon Baptist Church in Griffin.

Classic Tan, in the Griffin Crossroads Shopping Center, held its ribbon cutting ceremony March 9. Wade and Derinda Walker are the owners of the business.

The James S. Boynton Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, donated five books to the Flint Regional Library. They donated “Across the River — A Celebration of Georgia Division’s Centennial,” “In Search of Confederate Ancestors: The Guide,” “Civil War Tales.” “Black Confederates,” and “Black Southerners in Confederate Armies.” Chapter President Lynn Leaptrot presented the books to Librarian Evans Millican.

Otis Blake Jr. was honored as a “Rotarian of Distinction” for upholding the ideals of Rotary and bringing honor to his club and community. Blake became the fifth member of Griffin Rotary to be so honored.

Joe and Ronda Davis celebrated their first wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Travis, Ronald and Opal. The couple were married at Countyline United Methodist Church. They planned to celebrate with a trip to the mountains.
