From the Annals of 1909

A Central passenger train was fired into one mile south of Barnesville and Miss Mary Wadley, one of the passengers, had a narrow escape from injury or death, the pistol ball passing through a window glass and narrowly missing her. Detectives were put to work to try to capture the culprit who did the shooting.

George J. Coppedge was making some decided improvements at his home on West Broadway Street, adding several new rooms and a new roof. He also repainted his residence and put in a big bay window in the front part of the house. The improvements cost several hundred dollars.

The Southern Railway Company was rebuilding the Poplar Street flat bridge with wood despite the fact that there was a city ordinance requiring that such bridges shall be erected with steel.

C.D. Freeman, manager of the local telephone exchange, spent time at Milner making contracts for phones on the new line from there to Griffin. He stated that a line would also be established between Griffin and Hampton at an early date.

Donna McKinley was named “Miss Pike County High” and Joe Bill Campbell was named “Mr. Pike County High.” The two honors are among the highest the school can award. Donna is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.H. McKinley of Zebulon and Joe is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Campbell of Meansville.

Miss Dianne Mitchell of Hampton was chosen “Georgia Top Teen of the Week” by the Atlanta Chapter of American Women in Radio and Television. Miss Mitchell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Mitchell of Hampton.

Ricky Durham, formerly of Griffin, was named “Best All-Round” male student at Gatesville High School in Texas. Rickey attended North Side School while in Griffin. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Griffin of Griffin and the son of Mrs. Helen Durham who resided with her parents in 1946-48 while Sgt. Durham, her husband, was serving overseas in the armed forces.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Charles J. Kendrick, son of Mrs. Pattie Kendrick of Griffin, departed from Sandhofen, Germany with the 8th Division’s 13th Infantry for reassignment at Fort Riley, Kan. Kendrick is a graduate of Spalding High School.

The American Mills in Griffin, Jackson and Gordon received the “Partners in Progress” award from Sears Roebuck Co. for the second time in three years. The award is given to 80 suppliers out of 10,000 providing merchandise to Sears.

Mr. and Mrs. Thadis Carden of Griffin celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception given by their daughter and son-in-law Verlene and Robert Byous. The reception was held at the Oak Hill Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Approximately 150 friends and relatives called on the couple during the afternoon.

The Rev. and Mrs. Hoyt S. McGhee celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary with a dinner given in their honor by the couple’s children. The McGhees had nine children: Norman McGhee of Carrollton; Olenia Morris, Jeanette Peeples, Phyliss Shepherd, Grace English, Hilton McGhee, and Hilda Jett, all of Griffin; Wynne McGhee and Capt. David McGhee, both of Tampa, Fla.

Airman 1st Class Daniel W. Stover, son of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Stover of Griffin, graduated from a U.S. Air Force turboprop aircraft maintenance course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.

Virginia Fears Kimble, formerly of Griffin, was named Henry County Teacher of the Year. The music teacher at Wesley Lakes Elementary School was awarded a $2,000 certificate for an educational conference anywhere in the United States.

The Griffin High School Social Studies Department Veteran’s Day poster contest winners were Ross DeLosh, first place; and Alicia Glanton, second place. Cash prizes were awarded. The two ninth-graders were students of Lindsey Skrine.

Ken and Tonya Brown celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. They have three sons, Leroy Brown, Casey Brown and Kory Brown.

The Griffin Kiwanis Club presented $3,700 to the Flint River Council Boy Scouts of America. The funds were used to sponsor units in Spalding County for handicapped youth as well as a new youth project at The Salvation Army.

The Spalding County Lynx won the Spalding Basketball Association 11-13 girls league championship. Members of the team were Remesha Evans, Shantavia Williams, Kiara Smith, Kimberly Spear, KeShundra Wilson, Iesha Taylor, Shekeva Richards, Chasity Lawrence and Coach Sheholline O’Neal.

Jeffery Peeples signed to play football at West Georgia College. Attending the signing with Peeples were mother Jennell Richards, sisters Donna Ambles and Brandy Carr, Head Coach Kirk Hoffmann, uncle Alan “Duck” Richards, assistant principal Dexter Martin and defensive coordinator Vic Barrick. Peeples was Spalding High School’s all-time leader in tackles with more than 500 stops.

Mary Brittian of the Griffin Utility Club presented a donation to the Griffin-Spalding Elementary schools supporting the Accelerated Reading Program. Katie Inglis, Diane Isaacs and Natalie Wood presented a program to the club.

The Greenwaves won the Spalding Basketball Association boys 7-8-year-old Division Tournament championship. Team members were: Isaih Parker, Xzavier Champion, Marquevius King, Donovan Adams, Christian Hughley, Terence Britain, Te3marcus Blanton, Phillip Goodrum and Coach Michael Goodrum.
