Miss Rosalind Blakely was the charming young hostess for the Bridge Club and a few outside friends. The decorations of sweet blue violets and peach blossoms were spring-like and most attractive. The trophy, one of the late books, was won by Mrs. Robert Taylor, and after the game a delightful luncheon was served at the card tables by Mrs. Blakely and Miss Blakely.
N.G. Barfield, one of the county commissioners of Spalding, and Jack L. Patterson, of Sunny Side, were in the city and reported it quiet and rainy up at Sunny Side. Same thing here.
Mrs. M.L. Connor and Mrs. B.H. Connor returned from several days stay in Atlanta, and reported the condition of Mrs. Dr. Brantley, sister of the former, who had been seriously ill, much improved.
The Websterian Debating Society of the Griffin High School had decided that the influence of man had more effect upon civilization than that of woman. When they all get older they may find that the influence of man is generally influenced by some woman.

Miss Geraldine Maddox, of McDonough, was tapped for membership in Alpha Epsilon Upsilon, honorary scholastic society at Emory at Oxford.
Joanna Scoggins, daughter of Mrs. W.A. Hasty of Griffin, was among Emory University students named to a scholastic honor roll compiled by the College of Arts and Sciences.
Two firms in the Griffin area were awarded federal orders for goods they manufacture. Pan Electronics Corporation received a contract to supply the Navy with $21,609 crystal units. Concord Canning Company was awarded a $22,535 contract for canned pimientos to be delivered to the Veterans Administration.
Naval Aviation Cadet Stanley J. Hayes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy W. Hayes of Griffin, was undergoing pre-flight training at Pensacola, Fla. Before entering the service he attended Georgia State College of Business Administration.

Mr. and Mrs. Homer Bryant celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The young couple were the winners of a contest sponsored by the Imperial Theatre and other Griffin merchants 50 years ago. The prize was a wedding and all the trimmings.
One way for youngsters to keep cool on a hot July afternoon was to play in the sandbox at City Park. Wendy Pitts, Christie Whitley and Stephanie Brown spent more than an hour building a “Frog City,” complete with tiny frogs and a tiny lake. The three were at the park with a group from Fun and Fantasy Day Care. They are the daughters of Linda and Chance Pitts, Wandy and Jimmy Whitley and Cindy and Stanley Brown.
Darryl Timothy Campbell of the Georgia Experiment Station here won the American Society of Agricultural Engineers’ (ASAE) national award for his research paper on pecans. The title of his paper was “The Apparent Modulus of Elasticity of Maturing Pecans.”
More than $700 was raised for Griffin Retarded Citizens Association in the Fourth Annual Cabin Creek-Lite Beer Golf Tournament at Cabin Creek Golf Club. Mary Fitzhugh received the $708 on behalf of the association.

Bill Dunn presented Trooper David Gordon of the Georgia State Patrol with the grand prize from Doc Holliday Days 1999, a custom-engraved Winchester Wrangler. The stock was engraved by Penny Graham of Stone Mountain. A hand-tooled saddle scabbard by Brad Brown of Brad’s Outdoor Emporium in Blacksville, S.C., was also included.
Rick Smith, manager of Pine Ridge Regional Landfill, presented a check for $10,000 to Ivan Betz, chairman of Griffin Spalding Clean and Beautiful. The $10,000 was to be utilized for beautification projects, working with the Georgia Experiment Station and working with the School Planning and Beautification Program.
Army Pfc. Keiza Y.C. Hunt entered basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Hunt is the daughter of Pinkie M. Hunt and granddaughter of Cora L. Hunt, both of Griffin. She is a graduate of Griffin High School.
Tara L. McCray graduated from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash. McCray is the daughter of Lynn A. DeRoller of Griffin. She is a graduate of East High School, Rochester, N.Y.

Young AMBUCS members Brandon Rosier, 16, Ashley Burns, 16, and President Jennifer Fouts, 15, helped Meghan Thomas get her foot in the strap of her new AmTryke. AMBUCS donated the $1,800 AmTryke to Brenda Gassett and Pam Head’s special needs class at Spalding High School.
Fifth-grader Evan Jones was Cowan Road Elementary School’s spelling bee winner, and fifth-grader Nick Keene was the runner-up.
The Moore Elementary School third through fifth grade honor roll students were treated to an ice cream social by Delta Sigma Sorority.
