From the Annals of 1909

Miss Mary Lou Byrne, of Albany, who was a student at Bessie Tift College at Forsyth, was in the city, the guest of Miss Annie Bell Norman.

W.W. Wolcott, of Atlanta, a former well-known Griffinite, was in the city, the guest of relatives, and received a cordial welcome from his old friends.

Larkin Watson Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, of Jackson, selected Judge B.A. Jewhan, of Winder, as Memorial Day orator. The veterans were served a dinner on Memorial Day as usual.

Maj. M.J. Daniel had about completed arrangements with Prof. J.H. Walker for the purchase of property for the rifle range for the Spalding Grays on Milner Hill. He stated that E.H. Davis had been engaged to erect the range and that it would be ready for target practice by the first of April.

Members of Cub Scout Pack 15, sponsored by Mt. Zion Church, visited the Griffin Daily News and were taken on a guided tour of the plant. Those making the trip were Clifford Jester, Alfred Jester, Eddie Gates, Tommy Stroud, Van Johnson, Willie Lewis, Albert Darden, Jr., Bland Batey Jr., Harold Head, Jeromy Freeman, Raymond Head III, Melton Gates, Willie Roberts, Larry Willis, James Colbert, Thomas Byrd, Robert Fallen and Frank Taylor. The pack leader was Hosea Coleman.

Cadet Charles J. Hamrick of Thomaston was promoted to rank of First Lieutenant in the Cadet Corps at North Georgia College. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wyatt Hamrick.

Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Cagle, and three children of Ellijay, Ga., visited their parents and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Eppinger at Concord.

Elbert A. Martin, son of Mrs. Annie Arrington of Griffin, earned honor roll listing at the Southern Technical Institute at Chamblee, Ga. He was studying textile technology.

Five Griffin High School students attended the annual Home Economics Day at the University of Georgia. They were Barbara Rea, Pat Harold, Wanda Stewart, Mary Dee Stevens and Sandra Maddox. They were accompanied by Home Economics Teacher, Mrs. Bess Hoskins.

Attorney Sid Esary succeeded Tom Hamilton as president of the Griffin-Spalding United Fund. The 1983-84 goal was $160,000 and the campaign exceeded that, reaching $163,800 under Hamilton’s leadership.

Griffin architects Dick Spangler, Gerald Bilbro and Taylor Manley showed Sixth District Congressman Newt Gingrich a picture of what the new Spalding County Courthouse would look like when completed. The painting was placed in Gingrich’s office in the Griffin Post Office.

Teri K. Busbee, 15-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald D. Bunn, was selected as a finalist in the 13th Annual Miss Georgia National Teenager Pageant held at the Atlanta Marriott Downtown.

Bennie Cunningham, pro football player for the Pittsburgh Steelers, visited Griffin High School to speak to students about the important of a positive self-image and warning them of the harmful effects of drugs. He often related incidents from his own life and about teammates in talking with the students.

Navy Airman Angelito B. Ong, son of Donny O. and Maria E. Gunter of Barnesville, departed the Arabian Gulf while on a five-month deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans and Arabian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, based in Yokosuka, Japan.

Marine Lance Cpl. Kristopher Estes, son of Niles Estes of Griffin, completed a six-month deployment to Okinawa, Japan, with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines.

Navy Seaman Recruit Joseph G. Williams, son of Angela R. Williams of Williamson, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Willie and Patricia Stubbs celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary with a quiet evening out. Their children are Leslie, Dwayne, Vanessa, Andrea Michelle and Latarsha.

Rico and Terita Daniel celebrated their fourth anniversary in Savannah for a weekend trip. They have one son, Ricoriyun “RJ” Daniel. They were married at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

John T. and Sandie A. Jordan celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. The couple were married by the Rev. James H. Miller. They are the parents of John T. Jordan Jr. and Jamie Lee-Ann Jordan.

Amanda “Jill” Grant was named to the dean’s list of Gordon College, in recognition of high academic achievement. She is the daughter of Jan Grant, Dennis E. Grant and Deborah.

Griffin High School’s Regina Stephens’ Moderately Intellectually Disabled (MOID) class took a trip to the Festival of Trees with Gabrielle O’Shaughnessy’s class.

Vice President of the Griffin chapter of the AARP James Johnston presented a check on behalf of the organization to Stepping Stones Educational Therapy Center. Bonnie Brown and Saralyn Fountain accepted the check from Johnston. Each month, members of the AARP contribute to Stepping Stones to help them serve the special children in the community.
