Mrs. S.H. Hale and Miss Natalie Jones returned from a pleasant visit of several weeks to relatives at Carrollton.

Mrs. Ophelia Touchstone went to Doerun, Ga., where for some time she was the guest of her sister, Mrs. J.C. Fincher.

Flint River Spur, a small place on the Carrollton Road, 11 miles from Griffin, was made a flag station for Central trains Nos. 5 and 6, by order of the State railroad commission. Some people seemed to think Flint River Spur would be a town some day.

In order to make more room, the Griffin Banking Company decided to make some improvements in its present quarters. The furniture was to be rearranged and not only would the bank have handsome offices, etc., but the exterior of the building would be beautified. But the report that one or two stories would be added to the building was without any foundation.

Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Dekle Jr. and children, Miss Charlotte Dekle of Millen and Clyde Dekle III, and Bill Dekle, students at Emory University, spent a weekend with their father and grandfather, O.S. Tyus. The occasion was his birthday.

Members of the East Griffin Baptist Church surprised their pastor the Rev. S.J. Wheeler, with a special program during the evening service, Sunday, Jan. 18, in honor of his 9th anniversary as pastor of the church.

Misses Carol Shockley, Emily Harris, Diane Richardson, Brenda Pulliam, Noneal Johnson, all of Griffin, appeared on the Freddie Miller “Stars Of Tomorrow” show, over Channel 11.

Miss Frances Moss of Griffin was named to the dean’s list for fall quarter at Georgia State College in Atlanta. Miss Moss was attending Georgia State College through the nursing education program in cooperation with Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta.

Navy Airman Gregory K. Smith, son of Mrs. Annie Jo Buchanan of Newnan and the late Henry L. Smith, was promoted to Petty Officer 3rd Class. He was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea, homeported in Norfolk, Va. His wife, Deborah, is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. James O. Blalock of Griffin.

Pfc. David H. Ellison, son of Vernon L. and Shirley H. Ellison of Griffin, completed one station unit training (OSUT) at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga. OSUT is a 12-week period which combines combat training and advanced individual training.

Airman Willie B. Nealey II, son of retired Air Force Master Sgt. Willie B. Nealey of Fairview Heights, Ill. and Patty L. Butler of Barnesville, completed Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He then began on-the-job training in the mechanical and electrical field at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo.

Marine Cpl. Robert B. Dees, son of Prentice O. and Elizabeth A. Dees, of Stockbridge, participated in “Combined Arms Exercise-29” in the California desert. He was a member of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Marine Corps Helicopter Air Station New River, Jacksonville, N.C.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Randall C. Johnson, son of Randall Johnson of Griffin, was on a six-month deployment while assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 87, embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. Johnson is a graduate of Griffin High School.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class David P. Cato, a 1991 graduate of Pike County High School, was on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf aboard the guided missile frigate USS Halyburton.

Navy Foreman Kenya Whitehead, daughter of Annie L. Whitehead of Griffin, changed home ports as a crewmember aboard the submarine tender USS Emory S. Land. The USS Emory S. Land left its former home port in Norfolk, Va., to make La Maddelenda, Italy, its new home. Whitehead is a graduate of Griffin High School.

Larry Manley of Brooks showed off an 87-pound watermelon that he grew.

Millenium of Griffin Insurance celebrated their 10th year with Brenda Wright as owner. Debra W. Cauthen, Debra Howard, Carman Flangan, Brenda Wright and Stephanie Entrekin toasted to 10 years of serving the community of Griffin.

Two Brewton-Parker College students from the Spalding County area qualified for the dean’s list for the fall semester. They were Theresa Michelle Beverly of Griffin and Christina Dianne McLendon of Locust Grove.

Orrs Elementary School was the first elementary school in the state of Georgia and the second in the nation to become a Renaissance Master School. The school had 18 master classrooms out of their 31 regular classrooms.

Literacy Days participants from Cowan Road Elementary who placed at the system level of Griffin RESA Literacy Days competition were Taylor Winslow (first place system winner for fifth grade), Agenta Harris (second place system winner for second grade), Nikki Stone (second place system winner for fourth grade), Chance Crowson (first place system winner for kindergarten) and Samad Ali (third place system winner for third grade).
