McDonough Lodge No. 253, Knight of Pythias, was instituted with 39 charter members.
Mrs. Mark Janes was the delightful hostess for the Domino Club. Handsome ferns were in all the rooms, with bowls of violets on tables, piano and cabinets. When the game was finished, a delicious salad course and hot tea was served at the small tables.
Miss Rosaline Blakely was the charming young hostess for the Bridge Club and a few outside friends. The decorations of sweet blue violets and peach blossoms were spring-like and most attractive. The trophy, one of the late books, was son by Mrs. Robert Taylor, and after the game a delightful luncheon was served at the card tables by Mrs. Blakely and Miss Blakely.
Prof. Dan Milam, of this place, was conducting the singing at a revival meeting at St. Luke’s A.M.E. church in Columbus. Mr. Milam was an evangelist singer of considerable note.
Col. Earl P. Patterson, of Milner, established himself a law office over the Griffin Hardware Co.

Janice Powell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Powell of Zebulon, was named to the dean’s list at Georgia Teachers College. Miss Powell was a junior majoring in elementary education.
Pvt. Bobby Huckaby, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Huckaby of Griffin, was assigned to Fort Jackson, S.C. for his basic infantry training.
Navy Fire Control Technician 3rd Class Jesse L. Griggers, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Poss of Experiment, returned to San Diego, Calif. aboard the destroyer USS Shields after a six-month tour of duty in the western Pacific.
Navy Commissaryman 3rd Class Gerald L. Hatchett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luthern F. Hatchett of Griffin and Seaman Walter Miller Jr., husband of Mrs. Mary L. Miller of Griffin, were serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Midway, operating as a unit of the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Far East.

Mrs. Pauline Lynch of Zebulon and Mrs. Martha Bailey retired from United Cotton Goods. Mrs. Lynch, a machine operator, retired after 18 years of service and Mrs. Bailey, also a machine operator, retired after 19 years.
Dipper Dan, an ice cream parlor in the Spalding Square Shopping Center, opened under new management. A ribbon-cutting coordinated by the Griffin Area Chamber of Commerce was held during which county and city officials and officials of the Chamber attended. The new store was owned and operated by Frank and Agnes DeBenedittis.
The Griffin High Girls B-Team was voted Best B-Team at the Chuck Miller Basketball Camp at Gordon Junior College. The team received a trophy and each girl received an “I Survived Basketball Camp” shirt.
Marine Lance Cpl. Greggory G. McCuen, son of Gene C. and Annabelle McCuen, McDonough, received a letter of appreciation for superior performance of duty while serving with the 3rd Force Service Support Group.

Mr. and Mrs. Billy Alford celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary with a quiet evening out. Their children include Bill Alford, Tim Alford, Darrell and Tonie Alford, and Ray and Kathy Alford.
Bennie and Verdell Owens celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a trip to Toronto, Canada. Children include three daughters, Patricia Long, Sherry Teresa Tremble and Gwendolyn Thomas and two sons, Benjamin Owens and Virgenal Lee Owens Sr.
Larry and Laura Goss celebrated their 45th anniversary. They have two children, Kathy Reece and Mark and Karen Gooden. They spent their anniversary with a quiet dinner out.
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Brian H. Merrit, son of Ralph Merrit and Bernell Merrit of Barnesville, was on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Ross. Merrit is a graduate of Lamar County Comprehensive High School.

Anna Daniel, a senior at Spalding High School, was selected as a semifinalist in the Coca-Cola Scholar Program based on outstanding leadership, achievements and potential. She is the daughter of Millard and Mary Frances Daniel of Jackson.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Brett J. Randolph graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Ann Randolph of Griffin. Randolph graduated from Spalding High School.
Students in Joy McGee’s class at Spalding High School assisted researchers at the University of Georgia, Griffin Campus, by serving as new product testers. The students sampled and gave their opinions on a new peanut butter tart, similar to toaster pastries.
Atlanta Motor Speedway officials announced that Kelley Horton had been promoted to the position of ticket manager. Horton resides in Griffin with her husband Bert and sons Tyler and Austin.
