From the Annals of 1909

The Boyd Real Estate Agency closed a deal by which the E.P. Mallory place on South Sixth Street was sold to J.P. Nichols. This was one of the many real estate deals made by this active agency.

Mrs. James M. Kelley entertained at a domino party. The lovely new home was attractively decorated with growing ferns in jardinieres and vases of pretty spring flowers. Three tables of dominoes were played and the game was followed by a delicious luncheon.

The Dorcas Society celebrated their 42nd anniversary in the auditorium of the new Sunday school building. Among the most attractive features of the occasion was the recitations given by Miss Shatteen Mitchell, of Atlanta, and the female chorus, with all those taking part dressed in old fashioned gowns, mantillas and quaint bonnets.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mangham were the delightful host and hostess at a dinner in honor of Mr. Jennison, of Atlanta. The house was most attractive with palms and ferns and growing pink azaleas, the centerpiece for the lovely dinner table being a large bowl of violets and freesias.

Army Pvt. Wallace R. Upson, arrived in Germany and was a member of the 38th Artillery Headquarters in Darmstadt. Before entering the Army he attended Griffin High School and was a salesman with the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Griffin. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry O. Upson of Griffin.

Robert Michael Jackson, son of Mrs. Edna A. Jackson of Jackson and Allen Bruce Chambers, son of Mrs. Olin Greer of Flovilla enlisted for three years in the U.S. Army. Jackson enlisted in the Clerical Career Field and Chambers enlisted in the Electrical Maintenance Career Field. Both enlistees were graduates of Jackson High School.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Fred Hooks, on duty in the Military Department of Gordon Military College since 1955, reported to Fort Dix, N.J. for overseas shipment. He had been assigned to the 73rd Armored Artillery Battalion with station near Hanau, Germany.

Miss Anne MacKendree, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bowdre MacKendree, successfully passed her state examination for registered nurses. Miss MacKendree graduated from Crawford W. Long School of Nursing.

Paul Andrew Robinson of Griffin graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a master of science degree in management.

James Jeffrey Clark of Griffin was named to the spring quarter dean’s list at Georgia Southwestern College in Americus.

Mary Mills Blake, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew E. Blake, was honored as an outstanding fifth grade student at Woodward Academy’s Lower School honors banquet. Mary was also named to the school’s honor roll for the final grading period.

Charlene Li and Peny Peaden, both of Griffin, were initiated into the Gamma Eta Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta at Georgia Tech. The national sorority was chartered 25 years prior at Georgia Tech and was the first women’s sorority on campus.

Bruce and Ingrid Floyd celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary in Biloxi, Miss. Their children are Teresa Ritchie, Sabrina Chitwood, Scott Floyd, Skip Floyd, Diana Cleghorn, Jimmy Martin and the late Michael Martin.

Mr. and Mrs. Gene W. Phillips celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary in Panama City, Fla. They were married in Houston, Texas. They have two children, Rudy O’Keith and Jalissa Shenell.

Courtney Ingersoll of Griffin was awarded a Gordon College Foundation Scholarship to attend the two-year college in Barnesville. She planned to major in criminal justice. She is the daughter of John and Donna Ingersoll.

Melanie Virginia Evans was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Shorter College in Rome. She was a senior in early childhood education. She is the daughter of Rodney and Ginger Evans of Griffin.

In her first year of eligibility, Spalding High’s Samantha Lowrimore was named honorable mention on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s All-State team. Lowrimore played center field and batted leadoff for the Lady Jags.

New Hope Baptist Church Combined Choirs marked the 141st anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation with a selection of “Any Way You Bless Me.” The song was performed after guest speaker, the Rev. Reginald Jacobs delivered his sermon.

Nakia Davis and Nathan Hodgson of Griffin were awarded $1,000 Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarships as the program marked 30 years of recognizing restaurant employees who excel in the areas of leadership, academics and community involvement.

Amanda Lynn Brown of Spalding County made the fall semester dean’s list at Macon State College.
