From the Annals of 1909

Douglas Boyd Jr. entertained several of his little friends at dinner, celebrating the 11th anniversary of his birthday.

The centerpiece for the dinner table was a pot of jonquils on a platter around which were grouped eleven white candles.

A box of red, white and blue candy eggs ornamented with miniature hatchets and cherry trees, was at the other end of the table. A delicious menu of several courses was served.

Those present were little Miss Charlotte Boyd, Masters Bartlett Searcy, David Mangham, Nathaniel Bailey and Douglas Boyd Jr.

Mrs. Benjamin Blakely was the charming hostess for the Mystic Circle at her home on North Hill Street. The beautiful home was decorated for the occasion with pink carnations and misty ferns. The circle read one act of the Merchant of Venice, after which delicious refreshments were served by Miss Mary Beeks and Miss Marguerite Blakely.

Jonesboro was working for a “Blue and Gray” monument to commemorate those of both sides who fought around there.

Miss Fannie Gordon Kimbrough and her attractive guest, Mrs. Abner Cheatham, of Danville, Va., went to Atlanta to see Edna Wallace Hopper in “50 Miles From Boston,” remaining several days in the city as the guests of Mrs. Henry Burr.

Navy Seaman Donald C. Major, in the, was serving aboard the aircraft carrier Independance. Major is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Major of Abbeville, S.C. and husband of the former Miss Sylvia A. Brown of Griffin.

Pvt. Charles H. Eason of Hampton completed an eight week course in communications and message center procedures at the Southeastern Signal School, Ft. Gordon, Ga. He is the son of Mrs. Lillian Eason of Hampton.

Mr. and Mrs. Hiram S. Mullins of Milner celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. A dinner was given at the Holiday House for the immediate family.

Sgt. Ray H. Hattaway, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Hattaway of Griffin, enlisted in the United States Army for a period of six years.

Hattaway had recently returned from Europe where he had served for two years. He had been in the regular Army as a tanker for more than six years and planned to make a career in the Army.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Ronald T. Walden, son of Ralph Y. and Betty J. Walden of Stockbridge, reported for duty with Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 138, Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor, Wash.

Pvt. William L. Williams, son of Mattie S. and Emmitt Williams Jr. of Barnesville, completed the power generation and wheeled vehicle mechanics course at the U.S. Army Training Center, Ft. Dix, N.J.

Airman 1st Class Tammy F. Parks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Parks of 242 Armstead Circle, Griffin, has graduated from the U.S. Air Force financial services course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.

During Woodward Academy’s honors banquet Andrew Blake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Blake of Griffin was named the outstanding eleventh grade student in English and received the Sewanee Club Award judged by the faculty as outstanding in academics, leadership, and extracurricular activities.

Griffin resident Kimberly Mills was named to the president’s list at North Georgia College & State University for spring semester. A student must earn a 4.0 GPA for the president’s list.

Griffin resident Elizabeth Thelma Johnson earned a master of education degree from the Evening and Weekend College of Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga.

Retired Sgt. Major Horace and Dorothy Pearl celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. They had seven children: Horace Pearl, who died in 1946; Richard, who died in 1953; Arlene and Larry Pauciello, of El Paso, Texas; Lynn and Bruce Chambers of Griffin, Glenn Pearl of Jacksonville, Fla.; Gail and Jonnie Forehand of Ft. Rucker, Ala.; and Michael and Kathy Pearl of Griffin.

Ron and Diana Wayne of Griffin celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary. They were married in Eisenhower Chapel on the campus of the Pennsylvania State University by the bride’s father, the Rev. Edward Younken. The Waynes are the parents of Vanessa Rachel and Christian Ronald.

Mercer University’s School of Pharmacy recognized Griffin resident, Robyn Johnson during the school’s honorary luncheon in Atlanta. Johnson, a second-year pharmacy student, received a dean’s scholarship award during the ceremony.

Jasmine J. Williams of Griffin was selected by the Delta Epsilon Iota Academic Honor Society for membership in the local chapter at the University of Georgia. She attended Griffin High School. She was majoring in biological science (pre-med) with minor in psychology. She is the daughter of Vera Williams and Ronnie Lowe.

Amy Renae Morris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry G. Morris, graduated from the Art Institute of Atlanta with a bachelor of fine arts degree in interior design.
