The Merchants and Planters Bank, which had a very prosperous year the prior year in spite of the general depression, declared a semi-annual dividend of 5 percent.
The great influx of drummers into Griffin was very noticeable. Some of the merchants made for the back door when they saw them coming.
Dr. and Mrs. Robert Acree entertained with a beautiful 6 p.m. dinner, the first to which were invited the ministers of the Baptist churches in the city and the deacons of the First Baptist Church. Covers were laid for 12 and a delicious several course menu was served, the decorations being ferns and clusters of white lilies.
Col. Y.A. Wright of Jackson, entertained the members of the bar of that city with a possum supper, which was reported by visitors from Jackson as a most enjoyable occasion. Among those present were Col. Wright, Col. W.E. Watkins, Col. H.M. Fletcher, Col. C.L. Redman and Col. O.M. Duke.

Winners of the Griffin Daily News Christmas Coloring Contest were Ann Pitts of Griffin, first place winner; Darlene Hart of Griffin, second place winner; and Jack Smith of Griffin, third place winner.
Pvt. Harvey J. Hall of Griffin was assigned to basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Pvt. Hall, son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Hall of Griffin, is a 1956 graduate of Griffin High School. He was employed by Southern States Equipment Corp., Hampton, before entering the Army.
William L. Grant, SA USCG, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest D. Grant of Griffin, completed 13 weeks of basic training at the U.S. Coast Guard Receiving Center, Cape May, New Jersey. He attended Griffin High School.
Mrs. J.L. Stallings, formerly Miss Sue Brown of Griffin, was selected as Teacher of the Week. Mrs. Stallings was connected with the Bibb County School system and was teaching at Andrews School No. 2, Macon.

Carmon Pritchard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pritchard of Griffin, was awarded a Gwaltney Scholarship in religion and philosophy at Shorter College in Rome.
Pvt. Timothy S. Cunard, son of Patricia J. Mitchel of Conley and William H. Cunard of Forest Park, completed helicopter weapons systems repairer course at the U.S. Army Transportation School, Fort Eustis, Va. His wife, Vacretia, is the daughter of Raymond and Patricia Pitts of Griffin.
Vicky Ann Keadle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Keadle of Griffin, was one of six women to receive two stripes at Navy ROTC training graduation in Orlando, Fla. She also received a college scholarship and earned a 95.5 average. Vicky is a 1976 graduate of Griffin High School.
Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Paul D. Toms Jr., son of Paul D. and Dorothy A. Toms of Barnesville, graduated with honors from the U.S. Air Force airframe repair course at Chanute Air Force Base, Ill.

Charles and Faye Key Scott celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a trip. They planned to renew their wedding vows and a reception later. Their children are Chuck and Bonnie Scott of Griffin, and Alan and D’Ann Scott of Jonesboro. Mr. and Mrs. Scott were married at Hanleiter Methodist Church.
The Rev. and Mrs. Richard (Doris Smith) Fields celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their children are Donna and Judge Camp, Danny and Kaye Fields, Diane and Jerry Bailey, David and Marie Fields, and Demaris Gordy. Mr. and Mrs. Fields were married at the home of the Rev. Worth Huckaby.
Lynn Smith and Nicole James, nutrition employees of the Griffin-Spalding County School System, graduated from the School of Nutrition Culinary Institute at the University of Georgia.
Chad Day of Griffin won a silver medal for second place in the 1999 Special Olympics World Games in Raleigh-Durham, N.C. He represented the United States table-tennis team at the Games, in which 10,000 athletes competed.

Griffin native FA (SW) Stanley Atkins II was proudly serving in the United States Navy. Stanley graduated from Griffin High School in 2003 and completed basic training at the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. He was serving aboard the USS John F. Kennedy CV-67 Aircraft Carrier and completed his first tour of duty in “Operation Iraqi Freedom” serving in the Persian Gulf.
The Rotary Club of Griffin provided all eighth-grade students in Spalding County with their very own dictionaries.
Jimmy McGuffey, John Faulk, Bob Daniels, Sarah Perry and Bruce McKemie, also known as “The Auction Crew,” donated more than 60 bicycles to the Department of Family and Children Services to give to needy children in Spalding and Pike Counties. The group raised money to purchase the bikes through auctions. All items auctioned were donated by local businesses.
Agape Gardens celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony with representatives from the Griffin/Spalding Regional Chamber of Commerce. The colon hydrotherapy clinic is conveniently located at 567 Ninth St., across the street from Spalding Regional Medical Center’s emergency room.
