From the Annals of 1909

Miss May Woodward and Miss Annie B. Carmichael, of McDonough, were visiting the family of J.A. Woodward on South Hill Street.

Mrs. W.C. Beeks and Mrs. T.J. White were Griffin delegates to the convention of Auxiliary Societies of the Episcopal Church in Atlanta.

A stock company was organized at Senoia, composed of W.B. Baggarly, H.L. Ware, A.O. Baggarly, J.A. McKnight and others, to furnish lights for Senoia, which had been needed there a long time.

A runaway horse ran into a near-beer saloon on Hill Street, but did no damage.

A married philosopher could not understand why a woman who would not pay more than 17 cents for a lunch would pay $50 for a hat. Neither could the woman understand how hubby would pay $50 for a wine supper and only $2 for a hat.

Navy Radioman Seaman Gerald L. Evans, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Evans of Sunny Side, serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard, took part in a large fleet training exercise off the coast of southern California, involving units of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Army Staff Sgt. James F. Allen, whose wife, Aline, lived in Hazlehurst, was participating in a five-week large-scale field training exercise with the 3rd Armored Division in Wildflecken, Germany.

William G. Penley, USN, returned to Port Hueneme, Calif., after spending a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William S. Penley. He graduated from Youman’s school and was honor man of his class.

Army Pfc. Harry L. Banks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Banks of Griffin, participated with the 82nd Airborne Division in Exercise Dragon Head at Fort Bragg, N.C. He attended Griffin High School and was employed by the Spalding Knitting Mill before entering the Army.

Marine Lance Cpl. Amos C. Williams, son of Christine Maddox of Griffin, participated in “Team Spirit ‘84.” He was a member of Headquarters Battery, 12th Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan.

Tech Sgt. Walter F. Head, son of Alma C. and Robert Head of Griffin, was decorated with the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal at RAF Mildenhall, England. He is a 1968 graduate of Fairmont High School.

Mrs. Celestine Adderley, a Susie B. Atkinson Elementary School teacher, retired after 35 years of teaching. She had been in the Griffin-Spalding County School System the past four years. She also had 31 years in the Dougherty County School System in Albany.

Mark Eskins, Griffin High senior, signed a scholarship to attend school and play baseball with Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Ala.

Judy Chambers, Griffin’s only competitive women’s body builder, placed third overall in the AAU-Sanctioned Georgia Physique Contest in Macon.

Six Georgia Southern University students from Spalding County were named to the dean’s list for the spring term. They were Ryan J. Bonacci, Misty D. Burton, Catherine R. Carter, Tarsha F. Daniel, Kenya D. Fuller and Anne E. Vonderhaar.

Emory College, the undergraduate liberal arts college of Emory University, named the following Griffin students to the dean’s list for spring term: Bonnie T. Biles, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Biles; and Mitchell E. Peaden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Peaden Sr.

Wesleyan College student Erin McGavin of Griffin was named a President’s Scholar for the spring semester. Wesleyan students must be enrolled full time and earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average to be named President’s Scholars. The daughter of John and Evelyn McGavin of Griffin, she is a graduate of McIntosh High School in Peachtree City.

The top three finishers in the Griffin Ladies Golf Association’s 1999 Championship Flight were Gwen Skrine (champion), Carole Daniel (runner-up) and Lizzette Sherliza, who ended in third place.

Daughters of the American Revolution, Pulaski Chapter, members attended the Fall State Board of Management in Dublin. The chapter officers who attended included Jean Brown, chaplain; Christine Napier, regent; and Alice Blake, vice president.

T.J. Chambers, 5, and Courtney Vaughn, 6, students in Mrs. Brake’s Kindergarten class at Orrs Elementary School, decorated Indian shakers for Native American Day. When their projects were completed, they went with their classmates to the playground to rattle and dance with the shakers.

Club President Sylvia Hollums presented a Legion of Honor plaque to Kiwanis of Griffin member Ronnie Masey for 35 years of service in the Kiwanis of Griffin club.

Griffin High School student Grady Evans, 18, prepared to train in Colorado for a speed skating event in the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.
