From the Annals of 1909

One of the loveliest parties of the season, a linen shower, was given by Mrs. Andrew Gipson Smith in honor of Miss Ruth Bullard. The lower floor of the attractive home was thrown open and artistically decorated throughout with tall vases of white American Beauty roses, ferns and lovely while wedding bells, the color scheme of green and white prevailing and was carried out as far as possible in the delicious refreshments.

The Bridge Club was charmingly entertained by Miss Addie Anthony. The game was played in the parlor, which was lovely with American Beauty roses, and at the conclusion of the game, a delicious hot luncheon was served at the small tables.

Miss Rosa Doe was the delightful hostess for the Domino Club. The decorations used in all the rooms were roses, bright hued nasturtiums and handsome ferns growing in jardinieres. The score cards were hand-painted pink carnations. A delicious sweet course was served.

Fifteen young girls formed an athletic club, which met once a week. The first meeting was held at the home of little Miss Cynthia Ellis. Games were enjoyed, after which a dainty luncheon was served.

Navy Radioman Seaman Terry W. Lynch, son of Mrs. Flossie Lynch of Griffin was serving at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Mayport, Fla.

Airman Roger Edward O’Dell Jr., son of Mrs. Marion O’Dell of Griffin, completed his initial course of Air Force basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He was selected to attend the technical school for Air Policemen taught at Lackland.

Eugene Lynch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lynch of Experiment, enlisted for three years in the Army. Lynch was sent to Fort Jackson, S.C. for eight weeks of basic training. He was a former Griffin High School student and prior to enlisting was employed by Dundee Mills.

USN Ship’s Serviceman 1st Class Bobby J. Forrester, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Forrester of Griffin, returned to San Diego, Calif. aboard the destroyer USS Kidd after a six-month tour of duty with the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific.

Airman James M. Toney Jr., son of Evelyn C. Ingram of Griffin and James M. Toney Sr. of Forest Park, was assigned to Lowry Air Force Base, Colo., after completing Air Force basic training.

Pfc. Victor G. Taylor, son of Tommy and Sarah Taylor of Griffin, completed the man-portable air defense system course under the one-station unit training (OSUT) program at the U.S. Army Air Defense School, Fort Bliss, Texas. He is a 1982 graduate of Griffin High School.

Jim Bonds, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neal A. Bonds of Griffin was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force following completion of a degree in aviation management and the four year Air Force ROTC program at Auburn University. Lt. Bonds began serving his first tour of duty at Laughlin AFB, Del Rio, Texas, where he began undergraduate pilot training.

Navy Seaman Vincent D. Miller, son of Nellie and Fred O. Miller Sr. of Griffin, participated in “Baltic Operations 1984,” a major multi-national exercise in the Baltic Sea. He was a crewmember aboard the oiler USS Canisteo, homeported in Norfolk, Va.

Neal Burkhalter, a graduate from Griffin High School, received the McDonald’s Ray Kroc Youth Achievement Award. Burkhalter is the son of Sandra and Harry Burkhalter of Griffin.

Kerry Rolen and Melanie Hammons, both graduates of Griffin High School, received the Griffin-Spalding Art Association’s Helen Bryant College Scholarship. Rolen is the daughter of Kim and Kent Rolen and Hammons is the daughter of Nancy Darden and Robert Hammons.

Jeffrey Gardner Baldwin received his Eagle Scout Medal at First United Methodist Church. For his Eagle project, Baldwin painted parking lines and curbs along with handicapped parking places at First United Methodist. A reception was held following the ceremony.

The Griffin Kiwanis Club honored eight members with the Legion of Honor. They were Ron Lane, 30 years of membership; Fred Watkins, 40 years; Ken Ford, 35 years; Ralph Jones, 25 years; Darvin Williamson, 25 years; Dale Carley Sr., 30 years; Turner Davis, 40 years; and James Head, 40 years.

Tiger Cubs Pack 103, of Meansville, visited The Griffin Daily News. Members included were Andrew Carter, Griffin Brisendine, David Ray Jackson, Mark Green and Errick Sturm.

Cedrianna Wilkerson, 5, and Haley McDaniel, 6, from Mrs. Brake’s kindergarten class at Orrs Elementary School showed off their Indian outfits they decorated themselves and wore during Native American Day at Orrs before Thanksgiving.

Michelle Phillips was the 2004 Taylor Street Middle School’s Y-Club Turkey Teacher. The Y-Club sponsors the Turkey Teacher contest. Each year, the teacher whose students bring in the most donations for the school community is named Turkey Teacher.

Mrs. Carrie Davis’ third grade class at Beaverbrook Elementary School studied about the Cherokee and Creek Indians. They made several Indian crafts such as: decorated their shirts, made rain sticks and arrowhead necklaces.
