From the Annals of 1909

Mrs. Leola Jones sold her property on the corner of West Taylor and Ninth streets to Idus Drewry, and moved her family to make Atlanta their home, greatly to the regret of many friends.

Mrs. L.D. Hutson and daughter, Miss Pearl Hutson, returned home from a visit of several weeks at Cleburne, Texas. Mr. Hutson met them in Birmingham.

Mr. and Mrs. Huff, Dr. and Mrs. Willis, Mrs. W.H. Mills and Miss Allie Mae Neely, of Barnesville, and Mrs. Bailey, of Macon, arrived in the city to attend the wedding of Miss Bullard and Mr. Thornton.

The Mighty Haag Railroad Shows, which exhibited at East End Park in Griffin, had the only living genuine racing camels in America. At every performance you saw a real race, as anyone acquainted with the habits of the Arabs, know they would rather race than do anything else. The Mighty Haag Railroad Shows had a troupe of Arabs, that not only raced the camels, but put them through tricks never before attempted by anyone with a camel.

Miss Rebecca Bethune represented Mercer University in a debate tournament at the University of South Carolina. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.T.C. Bethune of Griffin.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Joe F. Steele returned to Hawaii to his station there after spending a 30 day leave with his mother, Mrs. Gaynelle Steele, and other relatives in Griffin.

Miss Pat Meeks who was a senior at GSCW in Milledgeville and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Meeks of Orchard Hill, returned to school after spending a week in New York. Miss Meeks represented GSCW at the annual conference of Editors and Business Managers of College Publications in New York.

Army Spec. 4 Jimmie Bozeman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie L. Bozeman of Griffin, participated with the 8th Division’s 50th Infantry in Operation Jump Down in Germany. He is a 1949 Spalding County High School graduate. His wife, Ophelia, was with him in Germany.

The following Griffin area students graduated from North Georgia College in Dahlonega: Jeffery Melvin Cleghorn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Cleghorn of Griffin, earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science. John Finley Steele, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Steele of Griffin, received a bachelor of business administration degree in finance. Karen Pamela Quick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Quick of Orchard Hill, was awarded the bachelor of science degree in chemistry. Karen Mae Sudwicks, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Max Sudwicks of Experiment, earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry.

Army Pvt. Michael J. McIntire, son of Thomas C. and Gloria G. McIntire of Milner, graduated from a combat tracked vehicle crewman course at the U.S. Army Combat Engineer School, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Staff Sgt. Norman A. Cochran, son of Clarence W. Cochran Jr. of Stockbridge and Mary P. Pegg of Lavonia, graduated from the Air Force non-commissioned officer leadership school at Moody Air Force Base, Ga. His wife, Vickie, is the daughter of James B. and Marie Kilgo of Zebulon.

Benson and Martha Hilley celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary. The couple were married at Providence First Baptist Church in Williamson.

Griffin Police Officer Morris Pike accepted the keys to a 1989 Chevrolet Corvette from Spalding County Sheriff’s Capt. Clarence Cox. The Corvette, which was the city’s new DARE car, was confiscated from a drug dealer earlier in the year. Pike, the DARE officer, takes the car to schools to talk with children about the importance of not using or selling drugs.

Photographer Rick Blackshear and Food Security Project Director Eddie Whitlock looked through an estimated 700 pounds of food donated in just six hours when Blackshear took Halloween portraits in exchange for 902 cans of food and $120 in donations to the Five Loaves and Two Fish Food Pantry.

Girl Scouts from Troop 152 held a yard sale to benefit the Griffin Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Jessie Grubbs of Troop 152 presented a check for $500 to Tom Grayson for the Griffin Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

Coleman Johnson, 11, received an award from George Weldon for a poster he entered in a Milner’s Fall Festival contest. Out of more than 50 applicants, Coleman, a St. George’s Episcopal School fifth-grader, won the $50 prize.

The Rev. and Mrs. Robert W. Presley (Sherry Miriam Dorsey Presley) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of Zack Presley, Zeno and Barbara Ann Presley, Teresa and Larry Maxwell and Barbara and Darrin Buice. The couple celebrated in the Magnolia Room at Howard Johnson Inn in Griffin.

Griffin High School sophomore Sambita Vasu and Spalding High School sophomore Rachel Rafferty won the Hugh O’Brian Leadership Award for exemplary leadership skills.

The Griffin Moose Lodge presented a $300 check to Eddie Whitlock, director of Five Loaves and Two Fish Food Pantry in Griffin.
