From the Annals of 1909

Mrs. Joseph M. Thomas and her guest, Miss Lillian Nelson, of Baltimore, went up to Atlanta to attend the auto races. They were accompanied by Capt. W.J. Kincaid.

Newton Beers, an eminent dramatic impersonator, appeared at the Bijou theatre under the auspices of Griffin Lodge No. 80, K. of P., and characterized in monologue in a most admirable manner Banim’s immortal fraternity drama, Damon and Pythias. He was greeted by a good audience, which was much pleased with the entertainment that he gave.

His many friends were delighted to see Edgar Newton at his accustomed place in the bank after several weeks illness.

W.F. Myers, business manager of the Southern Bell Telephone office in Griffin, spoke to the Spalding Junior High Science Club. He traced the development of the telephone to its present and gave the club members a glimpse at the future of the telephone industry.

Mrs. Louise Plumer went to Ft. Jackson, S.C., where she attended the graduation of her son, Pvt. Butch Freeman, from basic training. From there he was stationed in Texas.

Al Eppinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Eppinger of Zebulon, was named to the fall quarter dean’s list at Georgia Tech. He was a senior in mechanical engineering.

Four young men of Explorer Post No. 17 were awarded the Eagle Scout award at a ceremony held at the First Baptist Church in Barnesville. Those receiving the award were Ronald Gilbert, Jimmy Mathews, Jimmy Ogletree and Stanley Van Houten.

Eddie Parker, son of Mrs. Gene Parker of Griffin satisfied the requirements for a doctorate degree in dental surgery from Emory University.

John Johnson of Griffin was named an honor student for the second semester at Baptist Bible Institute in Graceville, Fla.

Phyllis Parks of Griffin was awarded a bachelor of business administration degree from Albany State College.

William Houser Davidson III of Griffin graduated with honors from Auburn University with a bachelors degree.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Nathan E. Herren, son of Roy G. Herren Jr. of Griffin, completed the Crytologic Technician Maintenance Course. Herren is a 1998 graduate of Upson Lee High School in Thomaston.

Marine Cpl. Octavious R. Shivers, son of Sandra Fears of Jackson, participated in Fleet Week 1999 in New York, while assigned with 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Shivers is a 1995 graduate of Jackson High School.

Hiram and Betty Baughcum celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a party for all friends and family in the fellowship hall of West Sunny Side Congregational Holiness Church. Their children are Peggy and Eddie Burke, Janice and Ned Ingram, Vickie and David Spillers, Mike and Lynn Baughcum, Joan and Bryan Sanders, and Randy and Rhonda Baughcum.

Brandon Birath, a senior at Pike County High School, was selected as one of 80 Provost Scholarship recipients from Shorter College for the 1999-2000 school year. Birath is the son of Don and Linda Birath of Zebulon.

Cornelius Randolph, second grader, Cedric Randolph, father, and Cleopatra Randolph, fourth grader, enjoyed a book at Orrs Elementary School’s Donuts and Dad Event. A total of 300 dads, grandfathers, uncles and friends attended.

Jacob Brown (kindergarten) and Vincent Harper (third-grader), both students at Crescent Elementary, were the top sellers for the Crescent PTO, Fall fundraiser. They sold $628.50 and $559.50 (respectively) worth of merchandise to raise money for Crescent. They each won a $50.00 gift card from Wal-Mart for their efforts.

NP Business Logistics, an accounting business, celebrated a ribbon cutting with the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce.

Mia Colquitt signed with NCAA Division I Alabama State in a brief ceremony at Griffin High School. At Alabama State, Colquitt also received the Deans Academic Scholarship in addition to her scholarship for softball to make it a full ride, according to her mom, Sherry Jones.
