Miss Cynthia Newton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Newton of Griffin, was elected president of the Wesley Foundation which is the Methodist Student organization on the campus of Shorter College in Rome, Ga. Cynthia was also junior representative to the Honor Board and Historian of the Shorter Players. She was secretary of the Social Council and a member of the Polymnian Society at Shorter.
Dr. Adeline Patton, 2nd vice president of the Georgia Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs and Mrs. Hester Handley, State Public Affairs Chairman, attended the District Two BPW Club meeting in Rochelle.
Col. George F. Shivers of Milner was appointed as Civil Defense Director for Lamar County. He replaced Bill Akins, who resigned. Governor Ernest Vandiver appointed Col. Shivers.
Ann Fullilove of Griffin was elected president of the Bell Annex and Terrell C Dormitory House Council for 1959-60 at Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville where she was a student.

Ann Elizabeth Walker of Griffin was named to the first president’s list at Clemson University. Ann, a 1984 graduate with a degree in early childhood education, had a perfect all-A average for spring semester.
Maria Powell Chapman was named to the dean’s list at Wesleyan College in Macon. She is the daughter of the late Leon Powell and Louise Powell of Griffin. She was majoring in education.
Mark Benfield of Griffin was awarded a doctor of medicine degree from Tulane University School of Medicine.
Kenneth S. Hurt, son of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Hurt of Hampton, graduated from Emory University in Atlanta with a LLM, masters of law in taxation.

Flynt Middle School seventh-grader Joseph Coggins received a letter from a Columbine High School student who thanked him for writing. Flynt Middle School students received 10 replies to letters they wrote to Columbine High School students.
Army Pvt. Joseph S. Bannister arrived at Fort Knox, Ky., for basic training. He is the son of Ruth A. Lovelace and David L. Bannister of Griffin.
Samantha Moore, a fourth-grader at Beaverbrook Elementary School, won second place in the University of Georgia’s Cooperative Extension Service’s poster/public service announcement/essay contest. Nearly 52,000 students participated.
Dennis and Janis Floyd were the winners of the Home Builders Association of Midwest Georgia’s Harley “Bash” reverse drawing held at the Griffin Kiwanis Fairgrounds. The drawing for the black 1999 Harley Davidson Road King was held as an association fund-raiser.

The Griffin Moose Lodge Family Center members honored National Make a Difference Day by presenting Tommy and Donny stuffed moose toys to Spalding County Sheriff Dee Stewart for his officers to give children in crisis.
Members of the Mary Persons High School Nature Club of Forsyth and High Falls Lake Association participated in the Plant Scherer-GA Cleanup event on the Ocmulgee River.
Students in Mrs. Willis’ pre-k class at Moore Elementary School geared up for Thanksgiving by donning feathers and learning the turkey dance.
Third, fourth and fifth grade Program Challenge students traveled to Atlanta to view the Van Gogh to Mondrian exhibit at the High Museum of Art. The students were able to learn about the view rarely seen paintings of Vincent Van Gogh, as well as masterworks by other artists.
