From the Annals of 1909

A spend-the-day party was given by Mrs. Robert Redding in honor of Mrs. John Reid, of Athens, the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Carlisle. The attractive home looked like a veritable flower garden, hundred of huge chrysanthemums were growing in pots on the wide veranda, while within the house, roses, violet and chrysanthemums were in every available space. The centerpiece for the dinner table with its lovely appointments was a tall case of white cochet roses with misty ferns, and scattered over the table were Parma violets.

A beautiful event and a pretty compliment to a number of out-of-town visitors, was the tea at which Mrs. Stephens Hook entertained in honor of Mrs. Joseph Boyd, Mrs. Joseph Mangham and Mrs. John Mangham, of Griffin.

Miss Alice Kincaid, who was attending school in Macon, spent Thanksgiving Day here with homefolks and friends.

J.T. Waldrop went up to Atlanta to attend a banquet given by the Masons of that city.

Peggy Lou Greene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Greene of Griffin, pledged Gamma Phi Beta, social sorority at Memphis State University. Miss Greene was a freshman training for nursing.

Mrs. Helen Spangler of Sunny Side returned from Washington, D.C., where she attended the Postmaster’s Convention. Mrs. Spangler was postmaster at Sunny Side.

John Maddox, faculty sponsor for the school patrol at Spalding Junior High, was presented a AAA certificate of appreciation in recognition of his work with the safety program of the school. The presentation was made at Spalding Junior High chapel by Rob Gordon of Griffin, AAA representative here.

The Rev. Ray Averett, rector of St. George’s Episcopal Church, was elected president of the Spalding County Ministerial Association. The Rev. Ray Heflin, pastor of the Baptist Tabernacle, was elected vice-president and the Rev. Shelby Cook, pastor of the Highland Methodist Church, was elected secretary-treasurer.

The Little Flower Shop, a new business to North Griffin Square, held its ribbon-cutting ceremonies. Store owners Phillip and Delores McCullough were joined by the city, county and Chamber of Commerce officials and neighboring business owners in festivities.

Jeff Cunfer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Cunfer of Griffin, completed requirements for the Eagle Scout Badge, a Scout’s highest rank. Cunfer was in Boy Scout Troop One at St. George’s Episcopal Church and his father was his scoutmaster.

Mrs. Kathy Baird Branan, Griffin High Spanish teacher, was elected “Teacher of the Year” by the school staff. She also was named “Foreign Language Teacher of the Year” in the state earlier.

Alesia B. Jester and Alvin L. Jester, daughter and son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter L. Jester of Griffin, were named to the dean’s list for spring quarter at Grambling State University. Alesia was a junior and Alvin a freshman. Both were majoring in computer science.

Thomas A. and Evelyn Howard Grant celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a dinner with family and friends. Their children are Jerry and Cathy Grant and Debra Grant. Mr. and Mrs. Grant were married in Turner County, Ga.

A poem by Mathias Koeppel, son of Anna Day and Albert Koeppel, took first place in the Ecotots (preschool) category of the “Creepy Crawlers in my Garden” contest sponsored by the Garden Club of Georgia and the National Council of State Garden Clubs.

Lynn Henley of Griffin earned a bachelor of health arts degree from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill.

Jimmy Jordan obtained his masters degree in public administration from Columbus State University. Jordan graduated with a 4.0 in his masters program and was the chief deputy of the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office.

Flint River Council Boy Scouts of America from Troop 8 attended an Atlanta Braves game during the annual Scout Night with the Braves event. The troop was one of more than 600 units present at the Braves game.

Boy Scout leader Stuart Cannon taught scouts from Spalding County the correct way to start a fire. Teaching camping skills was part of the Fall Camporee for the Scouts from Spalding County. The theme of the weekend was “Indian Lore.”

Benson and Martha Hilley celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary. The couple celebrated with a traditional Red Lobster dinner. The couple were married at Providence Baptist Church in Williamson.
