The Griffin Police Department (GPD) on Wednesday at about 10:40 p.m. responded in emergency mode to J.R. Crickets at 1412 North Expressway in reference to a person hit by a vehicle.

When officers arrived at the scene, they made contact with 38-year-old Kristine Varela, of Griffin, who stated that she was in the bar drinking with her sister and 23-year-old Jonathan Omorrow of Brooks.

According to the GPD incident report, Varela said that when her 38-year-old boyfriend, Darvin Smith of Griffin, arrived at J.R. Crickets in his 2004 International truck, Omorrow ran out of the bar and tried to start a fight with Smith, because he heard that Smith had used a derogatory term to describe his girlfriend.

As Omorrow went to hit Smith or jump on his truck, Smith drove off, which caused Omorrow to fall and hit his head. The report stated that the back wheel of Smith’s truck might have struck Omorrow as well, which could have added to the severity of the head injury he suffered in the fall.

Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene and called for a helicopter to fly Omorrow to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Griffin police made contact with Smith at 1800 North Expressway and gathered his information and his account of the accident. Police also ran Omorrow’s name through the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) database and found that he was wanted out of Helen, Ga., for failure to appear.

As of Thursday afternoon, no charges had been filed in the incident.
