Now it’s time for the waiting game.

Starting at 6 p.m. EST, former high school senior baseball players Telvin Nash and Miles Head will get to see if they’re going to start their professional baseball careers or if they will continue their playing days at the college level.

The 2009 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft is scheduled for today and Wednesday at 6 p.m. on ESPN and Griffin High’s Telvin Nash and Whitewater High’s Miles Head — who has local ties to Griffin — will be watching to see what happens.

Both guys said they will spend the evening at their respective houses with their families — they will not have any sort of party or celebration like former Griffin Bear Tim Beckham had last year. Beckham was selected No. 1 overall by the Tampa Bay Rays.

“We’re just going to sit and watch it together as a family,” Nash said. “Everybody is excited for me and will be pulling for me.”

“I’ll be at the house watching the Draft and hang out with my family,” said Head, who lives in Fayetteville. “Whatever happens, happens.”

Nash has been to several major league baseball tryouts recently, including the Houston Astros, the Texas Rangers and the Washington Nationals. Head was with Nash at the Astros tryout.

“I had a blast at the Astros tryout. I got to meet with all the team officials and the players,” Nash said. “We had batting practice and I played the positions of left field and third base. They wanted to see how soft my hands were and how well I could move my feet.”

Nash also said he played in a simulation game against the pitchers in the tryout and went 1-for-1 with a single to left. He even flashed a little speed on the basepaths for the scouts.

“I stole second base,” he said. “I’ve got some speed, but the coaches didn’t want me to run too much in high school.”

Nash said the highlight of the tryout in Houston was taking in two Astros games, one against the Colorado Rockies and one against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“Carlos Lee of the Astros hit a grand slam in one of the games and it was a monster shot,” Nash said. “I was impressed!”

Nash also got to meet former Astro Craig Biggio (he talked with him for about 45 minutes) and members of the NFL’s Houston Texans were also on hand, watching him try out. They had another agenda on their minds when they saw him.

“The Texans players asked me why I chose baseball instead of football,” he said. “They wanted me to come back to football — it was like they were trying to recruit me to play with them.”

Head had a bit of a setback at the Texas Rangers' tryout - he was hit by a pitch on his elbow.

"It was just a contusion - nothing serious," said Head. "I bounced back and was fine for the rest of the tryouts."
