Through the first half of the season there has been no local girls team hotter than Chad Hubbard’s Spalding High Lady Jags. Discounting a loss to South Atlanta in the season opener, the Lady Jags (8-4 overall) have won eight of 11 games including the last four in a row.

Their latest exploit included winning the Meriwether Holiday Tournament title on Saturday in Greenville 73-54 against the host team.

The Lady Jags currently sit in a two-way tie for third place with North Clayton (5-6, 3-3) in the Region 4-AAAA Div. B standings where they sport a 2-2 record going into the second half of the season which tips off Friday on the road at first-place Riverdale (7-8, 4-1).

Griffin High (6-6, 3-2) has also had its share of success this season, embarking on a three-game win streak at one point during a season where they have won three of their last four games including their last game, 43-39, against Upson-Lee in Christmas Tournament action in Barnesville.

The Veronica Lee-coached Lady Bears which currently sit second in Region 4-AAAA Div. B standings, tip off the second half of their season on Friday night at last-place Jonesboro (4-3, 1-2).

Another team that has done well recently is the Griffin Christian girls team. The Lady Crusaders have amassed a 7-6 record during the early going this season. Highlights have included win streaks of two and three games, not bad for a program that won all of two games last season.

The David Hammond-coached Lady Crusaders (7-6 overall, 1-1 region), which currently fourth in the GISA Region 4-AA standings, tipoff play in the second half of the season on Friday at last-place LaGrange Academy (5-3, 0-0). Having defeated Trinity-Sharpsburg in their last game to snap a two-game losing streak, the Lady Crusaders step into the second half of the season with a little momentum to boot.
