The Griffin Spalding County Land Bank Authority is considering the purchase of the old Haisten funeral home on Meriwether Street.

The antebellum structure, also formerly a hospital, has sat vacant since being donated by the Haisten family to the Chamber of Commerce. The most recent potential use for it was a women’s halfway house, according to Land Bank Authority Chairman Newton Galloway, but that project never came to fruition.

The debt on the building is more than $100,000 and there’s $10,684 owed in back taxes, said Land Bank Executive Director John Joiner. He estimated it would cost more than $10,000 just to secure the building, with its multiple entrances, large windows most of which are broken, and a sun room.
