The Griffin High Lady Bears basketball team made a valiant second-half comeback, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Bears fell to the Riverdale High Lady Raiders 39-38 Friday night in Region 4-AAAA Division B action at The House on Senior Night.

The Lady Raiders got a measure of revenge against Griffin, avenging their loss to the Lady Bears at Riverdale. Riverdale improves to 13-11 overall and 9-5 in region play, good enough for second place in the subregion standings. Griffin falls to 10-13, 7-7 and remains in third place in the standings. The teams split the season series, with the road team winning both games.

Both teams started out extremely flat and the first-quarter score reflected that. Riverdale only led 7-4 heading into the second quarter. The teams didn’t do much better in the second, but Riverdale did enough to keep Griffin at bay, holding an 18-12 lead at halftime.

Both teams traded baskets in the third, as Sequoia Nelson scored 8 points for Riverdale inside and Griffin’s Ashton Elliott scored four in the period. Anastasia Winder sank a 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining in the quarter to give Riverdale a 32-21 lead, its biggest of the game. But Griffin guard ReRe Mangham sank a knockdown trey at the third-quarter buzzer to cut the deficit to 32-24.

The Lady Bears roared back in the fourth quarter. With Riverdale leading 33-26, Griffin embarked on a 6-2 run to get within three points at 35-32 with 4:30 left in regulation. After a defensive stop, Mangham sank a wicked trey to tie the game at 35, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. The home crowd wasn’t done cheering, because second later, Lady Bears point guard Shacoria Jones hit another trey to give Griffin its first lead in a long time, 38-35, with 2:30 left. Riverdale’s Morgan Muchari made a layup to make the score 38-37 and Toni Thomas sank two free throws seconds later to give the Lady Raiders the lead again at 39-38 with 1:18 left.

Riverdale turned the ball over with 18 seconds left, giving the Lady Bears a chance to win at the end. But Mangham missed a trey and senior Xandria Hosely’s rebound putback was off, giving the Lady Raiders the narrow victory.

Nelson led Riverdale with 14 points and her teammate De’Ana Turner added 9. Jones led Griffin with 12 points, followed by Elliott with 11 and Mangham with 9 for the Lady Bears, who host subregion foe North Clayton Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the regular-season finale.
