Desiree Corbin recorded her second straight double-double, scoring 22 points and snagging 11 rebounds to lead the Spalding High Lady Jaguars to a 53-35 win over the Locust Grove Lady Wildcats Tuesday evening in Region 4-AAAA crossover action at SHS. Locust Grove is in Division A of the region.

Spalding, out of Division B, won its home opener and its third straight game, improving to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in region play. The home team sported new uniforms complete with new sneakers Tuesday.

The Lady Jags won in the home debut of first-year head coach Chad Hubbard, despite not playing their best overall game. Spalding missed 16 free throws and also had a slew of turnovers Tuesday evening. The good thing for the Lady Jags is that Locust Grove had even more turnovers, committing several that led to easy baskets for Spalding.

Spalding jumped out to a 13-7 first-quarter lead, but it made some mistakes which allowed the Lady Wildcats to go on a 6-2 run to cut Spalding’s lead to 15-13 in the second quarter. Spalding played a bit better later in the quarter to lead 21-19 at the half.

Spalding opened the third quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 34-23 lead with 2:34 left in the period and put the Lady Wildcats away. Spalding’s pressure defense led to LG turnovers and quick baskets for the Lady Jags. Spalding held LG to 16 points total in the second half while scoring 32 points themselves in the half.

Twandalette Cotton added 16 points for Spalding and Shaquoria Reid chipped in 5 for the home team. Sabiyah Broderick led LG with 12 points and Temia Juarez chipped in 8 for the visitors.

The Lady Jags get back into action Saturday at home against Walton High at 6 p.m. The game scheduled for Friday at Stockbridge High was moved due to the Stockbridge football team hosting a state quarterfinal playoff game that same night. Spalding will now play at Stockbridge on Jan. 12.
