Lady Jags finish strong at Jones County Invitational

GRAY, Ga. — The Spalding High cross country teams posted a pair of top six finishes Saturday at the Jones County Invitational.

Medaling for the the Spalding girls team were Stephanie Estrada (22:40, in 6th out of 180 runners), Li Anne Harris (24:11 in 15th) and Blair Dunaway (20th in 24:38) as the Lady Jags placed fourth out of 16 teams. Medaling for the Spalding boys team was Ben Parker (4th out of 240 runners in 18:31) as the Jags finished sixth out of 20 teams.

“Even though we did not have our best times Saturday at Jones County, some of the kids had their best runs,” said SHS coach Dolores Owen. “The course was a little long, and it was very hot and humid, so overall it was a very good effort on all their parts.”

Rounding out the rest of the Lady Jags’ lineup were: Grenishia Daniel (26:22), McKenzie Dallas (55 in 26:30), Emma Johnston (43rd in a PR 25:48), Alisha Jordan (96th in 28:19) and May Melton Geiger (108th in 28:25). The only other PR was Laney Ballard.

Rounding out the rest of the Jags’ lineup were: Ryan Silvis (43rd in 20:22), Daniel Blake (60th in 21:01), Christian Gray (63rd in 21:04), Jon Eady (69th in 21:11), Johnathan Mitchell (103rd in 22:35). The only PR for the boys came from Taylor Smith in 22:32.

Middle School runners both ran PRs. Jacob Etheridge was 107 out of 245 runners in a PR of 21:41. In the girls middle school race, Bethany Frank had a PR of 24:13 and was 142nd out of 240.

“The season is going better than I expected,” added Owen. “I am excited about the rest of the season.”

Before the Jones County meet, Spalding ran in the Warner Robins Invitational on Sept. 11. The girls placed 11th out of 25 teams, while the boys teams finished fourth in a field of 25.

“Warner Robins it is a flat course, and teams usually post their best times there — we did also,” said Owen.

Spalding’s girls team produced four medal winners in Lianne Harris (7th out of over 200 runners, in a PR of 22:16), Stephanie Estrada (9th in 22:29), Blair Dunaway (20th in 23.26) and Grenisha Daniel (21st in 23:32 a PR). Rounding out the lineup were: McKenzie Dallas (49th in a PR 25:37), Hope Lovelady (72in in a PR 26:35) and May Melton Geiger (74th in a PR 26:39). Other girls with PRs included: Alisha Jordan, Jakiyah Stinson, Jasmine Bradley, Jasmine Wheeler, LeeAnn Frank, Sydney Flatt, Laney Ballard and Natalie Mathis.

On the boys side, there were also a lot of PR’s. Ben Parker was 7th out of 340 runners, a PR time of 17:33 and Daniel Blake (24th in a PR 18:40) also medaled to lead the Jags. Also suiting up for Spalding were: Brett Piland (33rd in a PR 18:54), Ryan Silvis (49th in a PR 19:35), Jon Eady (63rd in a PR 19:52), Christian Gray (83rd in a PR 20:18). Others with PRs were Austin Peek, Jess Piland, Gergevious Glover, Johnathan Mitchell, Vincent Harper, Aaron Moss, Takuya Gatlin and James Ogletree.

The team continues its season with its next meet Sept. 29 at the Horse Park in Conyers, Ga.
