King misses U.S. Open cut by 3 strokes

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. — Griffin City Golf Course head pro Charlie King missed advancing from a local U.S. Open qualifier by three strokes Monday at Planterra Ridge Golf Club.

King shot a 1-under 71 on the 6,875-yard layout. Eight players made the cut and two were named alternates in the 134-man field.

Those who made the cut shot 68 or better. The alternates each shot 69. All those who made the cut now advance to Sectional qualifying at sites throughout the country.

The 110th U.S. Open Championship will be played at the Pebble Beach Golf Links on June 17-20.

Other players of local note who tried to qualify Monday included two-time Griffin Classic champ Tim Weinhart (73) and Justin Estes (75) of Williamson, Ga.

King qualified for the 2007 U.S. Senior Open.

KYLE HOLT GOLF TOURNEY: The Kyle Holt Golf Tournament will be held at 9 a.m. on May 22 at the Griffin City Golf Course. Fee, $50 per person and $200 per foursome, includes light breakfast, lunch and golf. Individual or business sponsorships are available for $50.

Holt is a third grade student at Jordan Hill Elementary in Griffin who has just been diagnosed with kidney cancer.
