GREENVILLE — Markee Dickerson scored 16 points and Alex Bonner added 11 Saturday night as Spalding snapped a two-game losing streak with a 64-58 victory against Marion County in the Meriwether Holiday Tournament at Greenville High's Bill Atkins Gym.

Class AAAA Spalding (6-4) trailed 20-12 at the end of the first quarter but led 33-26 at the half and 45-44 going into the fourth where they prevailed 19-14 as Class A Marion County (4-3) lost its second in a row.

"We're becoming better defensively, and we executed down the stretch," said first-year Jags head coach Kemo Spear.

Rounding out Spalding' leading scorers were Phillip Goodrum (9); and Omari O'neal and Xeryous Dewberry (5 each); as well as Stephen Thrash, Ja'Quarrian berry, Terrance Brittian and Monquez Sullivan (4 each).

Dickerson scored 15, Brittian 12 and Goodrum 11 to lead the Jags in an 83-71 tournament-opening loss Thursday to Taylor County. Gerdarius Troutman scored 36 and Keyshawn Baker added 23 to lead Class AA Taylor County (then 6-2) as the Vikings won for the fourth time in their last five games.

SHS led the Vikings 25-20 at the end of the first quarter but trailed 41-33 at the half before regaining the lead 56-48 heading into the fourth quarter where Taylor County prevailed.

Spalding's first game during the break was a 74-53 loss to Newnan on Dec. 22 at SHS. Brittian paced Spalding with a team-high 10 points as the Jags had a three-game losing streak snapped and Class AAAAAA Newnan (then 6-2) won its third in a row and for the fifth time in six games.

Since then Newnan (now 8-3), which placed four players in double figures — Daniel Dean (18), Immanuel Griggs (17), Diamond Jones (16) and Tonaris Portress (11) — against Spalding, has won two more before losing.

Spalding (6-4 overall, 3-1 subregion) jumps back into Region 4-AAAA, Div. B Friday when it travels to take on Riverdale (8-6, 4-2). Other teams in the subregion include: Jonesboro (8-2, 4-0), North Clayton (7-5, 5-1) and Griffin (8-4, 3-2) as well as Upson-Lee (2-4, 1-2)
