Markee Dickerson, uncharacteristically quiet on a night where he was limited to but a single three-point shot in the first quarter, made the most noise in the end, sinking a fadeaway jumper with :19 left in overtime to lift Spalding High over crosstown rival Griffin, 64-61, Saturday night as both teams ended the weekend the same place they started it 48 hours earlier — tied for fourth place in Region 4-AAAA Div. B.

Stephen Thrash scored 13 points and Phillip Goodrum and Alex Bonner added 10 each as Spalding (9-10 overall, 6-7 subregion) won its second in the the last three games and rebounded from a 26-point loss 24 hours earlier at first-place Jonesboro to score it most emotionally satisfying victory of the season, avenging a 53-48 loss at Griffin on Jan. 11.

Rayshod Armstrong scored a season-high 23 points and Tae Mayes added 21 as Griffin (12-10, 6-7), which had won over arch rival Upson-Lee 24 hours earlier to move into sole possession of fourth place, lost its fifth in the last six games to fall back into a tie for fourth in the six-team subregion.

Saturday's game was a roller-coaster ride from beginning to end, including the four-minute overtime where there were two lead changes and two ties - all in the final 2:48.

Armstrong broke the ice on a slam with 2:48 left that was matched on a putback by Dickerson with 2:14 to play. From there Armstrong, who scored all four of his team's points in overtime, drew a foul and made a pair of free throws with 2:04 left to give his team its last lead of the game, 61-59.

Bonner made a reverse-underhand layup with 1:36 left to tie it 61-all before Dickerson knocked down his eventual game-winning shot with :19 left. Thereafter, Mayes tried to tie it on a shot but missed. Thrash rebounded the ball and was fouled with :05.7 left before he made the second of a pair of free throws to account for the game's final margin.

Griffin than managed to get off a three-point shot from mid court that missed at the buzzer as the Spalding fans rushed onto the court in celebration.

Spalding had the best chance to end the game in regulation but missed on a shot by Thrash with :11.2 left. Griffin got the rebound and Armstrong tried a three-quarter-court shot that wildly missed.

The ending, both in regulation and overtime, was indicative of how the rest of the game was played.

Griffin, which built as much as an 11-point lead in the first half on a shot by Demaree Walker with 1:00 left to play in the first quarter, led 25-14 at the end of the first quarter and 33-26 at the half.

Spalding came storming back, getting within three of the Bears on a putback by Xeryous Dewberry with 6:40 to play in the third before taking the lead on a layup by Bonner with 6:28 left in the third as the home crowd went wild.

Griffin retook the lead by two on a slam by Armstrong with 4:32 left in the third before Spalding's Terence Brittian made a reverse-underhanded layup to tie it with 3:56 to play in the third and another basket with 3:23 to play in the third to give his team a two-point lead.

Spalding upped its lead when Omari O'Neal made one of two free throws with 2:52 to play in the third before extended it to 44-39 on a three-point shot by Cameron Johnson with 1:06 left in the quarter.

Armstrong was sent to the line with 1:03 left in the third when Spalding was slapped with the first of two technical fouls in the game. Armstrong made both to bring his team within three, 44-41, of the Jags. That's when Goodrum made a thee-point shot with :34 left in the quarter to put his team up by its largest margin of the game, 47-41. Griffin, however, quickly cut it back down, 47-43, on a layup by Anforne' Stroud with :27.9 left in the third.

Armstrong then made a pair of free throws win 7:11 left to play in the fourth quarter to leave his team trailing by only two, 47-45. Dewberry made a jump shot with 5:56 and Bonner a layup with 4:40, sandwiched around another pair of free throws by Armstrong at 4:49, to leave SHS in the lead by four, 51-47.

After Dickerson missed a pair of free throws with 4:09 to play, Griffin's Kelvin Waldon took advantage of another technical foul against SHS, making a pair with 4:03 to bring his team within three of the lead before Mayes made a three-point shot to tie it 51-all with 3:47 to play.

The battle, however, was far from over as O'Neal made a jump shot with 2:43 left to give his team a 53-51 lead. Griffin's Jeremiah Williams made one of two free throws with 2:26 left to leave GHS trailing 53-5 before Mayes made a jump shot off the glass in traffic with 2:14 left to provide Griffin its last lead, 54-53, in regulation.

Bonner scored on a putback with 1:58 left and then on a pair of free throws with :57.3 left to give Spalding a three-point lead, 57-54. Griffin cut it to one, 57-56, on a putback by Armstrong with :46.1 left.

After Goodrum missed the first of a one-and-one for Spalding with :32.5 left in regulation, Mayes made the second of a pair of free throws with :19.4 left to tie it 57-all. Neither team could separate itself thereafter, sending the game into overtime.

Spalding continues its season with games Friday, Feb. 1 at home against third-place North Clayton (which will be Senior Night) before closing out the regular season next Tuesday, Feb. 5 at next-to-last place Upson-Lee. Griffin, meanwhile, closes out the regular season hosting second-place Riverdale on Friday (which is Senior Night) and third-place North Clayton on next Tuesday.
