A local teen is looking for donations to get a wheelchair lift for a van.

Griffin High Schoolstudent Tyler Crumsey, 15, was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive muscle wasting disease on Oct. 31, 2005, according to his mother, Amanda Gramling. He has to use a wheelchair to get around.

Recently, Tyler was named the 2012 Georgia State Goodwill Ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. But to travel and make public appearances to promote educational and fund-raising campaigns for the MDA, the family needs a wheelchair lift for a van.

His mother, with some help from her employer Storage World, will be holding a couple of events next week to help raise money to get the lift.

The first event will be at the Ryan’s in Griffin, from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the banquet room. Gramling said she will be accepting donations and will be giving out donated kids meal cards to Ryan’s as well as tickets to the local movie theater and bowling alley.

On Saturday, Nov. 3, the Storage World at 490 Eagle's Landing Parkway in Stockbridge where Gramling works, will hold a community wide yard sale to raise funds to “Help Lift Up a Life.” Storage World will match all donations up to $5,000.

The yard sale is $20 to participate for vendors. There will be raffle tickets sold at the event to help raise money for the wheelchair lift.

Donations to the Tyler Crumsey Special Needs Trust can also be made at any Storage World or SunTrust location or by PayPal at thetylercrumseytrust@gmail.com. For information on the yard sale call Storeage World at 770-474-2266 or visit www.storeageworldinc.com/tyler for information and a link to donate.
