The Lady Bears of Griffin will have a tough assignment today as they travel to face the Locust Grove Lady Wildcats (10-4-1, 2-0 region) at 5:30 p.m.
“Locust Grove is probably the best team in our region. It’s going to be a battle against them,” said Griffin head coach Kevin Mobley. “But if we come out and play focused softball and play good defense, I like our chances.”
Mobley said junior Chelsea Calloway has been hitting the ball well for the Lady Bears along with senior Katie Rowell.
“Once we get our middle of the lineup hitting better, we will be very tough,” he said.
After Tuesday’s game, the Lady Bears of Griffin come home to play region foe Eagle’s Landing (3-6, 0-1) Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Spalding will host two region games at 5:30 p.m. this week: Today’s game against Jonesboro and Thursday’s game against Stockbridge (5-0, 1-0).
“We’ve got to go out and play well, putting pressure on both teams’ defenses by hitting well. We must also play fundamental defense,” said Lady Jags head coach Rusty Hudson. “If we do those things, we’ll have a good week.”
Hudson said sophomore Lora Rape’s arm is feeling better which enabled her to pitch in practice Monday. Rape or freshman Jessica Bunn will take the mound today against Jonesboro. Sophomore pitcher Abby Toland is out and junior infielder Toni Willis (knee) is also out, but sophomore Quaneshia Walker has done well in their absence at the plate and at second base.
“Walker’s done very well. She’s had about four or five hits in two games,” Hudson said.
