According to an incident report by the Griffin Police Department (GPD), officer Dawn Storm was patrolling the area of Ninth Street and West Tinsley Street Friday at about 11 p.m. when she heard between six and eight gunshots in the area.
As she proceeded to drive toward the origin of the gunshots, Storm observed a person lying face down on the sidewalk of North Eighth Street, approximately 30 to 40 feet north of the intersection of North Eighth Street and West Tinsley Street, having sustained a gunshot wound.
After immediately heading toward the person — who was identified as 26-year-old Jarvis Bibbs, also known as Bean, of 509 N. Eighth St. — Storm felt for a pulse on his wrist. Bibbs reportedly was able to speak slightly, though Storm observed a large amount of blood coming from the area around his head.
An ambulance was called to the scene, and Bibbs was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died almost a day later.
Although two witnesses — who stated that they were with Bibbs when the shooting took place — were interviewed following the incident, the GPD had not identified any suspects as of Monday afternoon, according to GPD Capt. Dwayne Jones.
Jones said the incident is being investigated as a homicide.
GPD investigators are awaiting autopsy results and will release more information as it becomes available. Griffin police are asking anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact Sgt. Daniel Jett, with the GPD’s criminal investigation division, at 770-229-6452, Extension 507.
