The Griffin Christian Lady Crusaders volleyball team (No. 3 state-ranked in GISA Class AA) improved to 11-0 on the season with their 3-0 victory over crosstown rival Skipstone Academy Monday evening in non-region action at home.

Griffin Christian won the match 25-14, 25-9 and 25-17 in a serious case of big sister getting the best of little sister once again. The Lady Crusaders defeated the Lady Warriors of Skipstone in three games at the Warrior Warm Up tournament last month.

Skipstone (0-5 overall) tried hard, but the young Lady Warriors squad was no match for the talented Lady Crusaders. Griffin Christian’s powerful serves often bounced off Lady Warriors players and if they did keep the balls in, they were blocked at the net by GC.

To Skipstone’s credit, the team fought till the very end. For example, Griffin Christian jumped all over Skipstone in the third and deciding game 20-7 at one point but instead of getting down, the Lady Warriors dug down deep and kept battling. They made several hustle plays and forced Griffin Christian into several hitting errors, climbing back into the contest. Skipstone’s Rebecca Hassert, Alyssa Hughes and Noel Padgett helped the Lady Warriors climb within eight at 24-16 before GC finally put the game and match away at 25-17.

“Griffin Christian is an excellent team. But we didn’t give up and we kept on fighting,” said Skipstone coach John Hassert. “I believe this is a great learning experience for our girls.”

GC travels to face Arlington Christian today at 6 p.m. while Skipstone hosts Lafayette Christian Thursday at 6 p.m.
