Gordon College in Barnesville will be tobacco-free come June 1, 2011.

Faculty, staff and students recently voted to ban all forms of tobacco from college-owned properties, according to Public Information Specialist Tamara Boatwright.

These properties will include classrooms, classroom buildings, parking lots, the athletic complex, walking trails, the amphitheater, open campus areas and residence halls.

“This is part of an overall wellness initiative that we will be implementing, involving students, faculty and staff,” said Gordon interim President Shelley Nickel on the college’s Web site. “We want healthy Highlanders, and this is our first step in achieving that goal.”

Nickel added that over the next few months, Gordon College will begin providing information on tobacco-use cessation programs.

Asked who will be enforcing the ban on tobacco and what the consequences might be for those violating it, Boatwright said policies on those issues are being developed.
