Of the county’s 35.670 registered voters, 25,176 or 70.58 percent voted in the Nov. 6 election. Of those, 58.3 percent voted early, with 3.7 percent absentee by mail, and 54.6 percent at early in person voting.
Only 41.1 percent or 10,353 of the voters went to the polls Tuesday.
The race with the most votes, at 25,057, was the presidential race, with Republican Mitt Romney winning in Spalding County with 14,901 votes or 59.47 percent, to 9,884 votes or 39.45 percent for incumbent Democrat Barack Obama, and 272 or 1.09 percent for Libertarian Gary Johnson.
Of Spalding County’s 21 precincts, Romney won 15 and Obama won six —Second Baptist Church, Fairmont, Experiment Station, City Park, Gary Reid and Community. The highest vote count for Romney by precinct was 1,261 in Sun City, with lowest at 63 at Fairmont. For Obama, the highest vote count by precinct was 1,036 at Experiment Station, while the lowest was 40 at Blalock.
The closest precinct in the presidential race was Experiment Station where Romney had 868 votes to Obama’s 1,036, a difference of only 168 votes. The widest gap was at Fairmont with 914 votes between Romney’s 63 votes and the 977 for Obama.
The highest turnout was at Sun City, with 1,899 voters, while the lowest was at Blalock with only 388.
The candidate with the most votes during the Nov. 6 election was unopposed Sheriff Wendell Beam with 19,116 votes. Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson had the lowest number of votes at 272.
The race with the second highest participation was the charter schools amendment, with 23,056 votes cast. Of those, 61.85 percent or 14,261 were in favor, with 38.15 percent or 8,795 opposed. This amendment also passed in each of the 21 precincts, with the highest yes and no votes at 1,211 yes and 565 no, both in the Sun City precinct.
The race with the lowest turnout was the Sunday alcohol sales in Orchard Hill, as there are only 120 registered voters and of those 82 came out, with 46 or 56.1 percent voting yes, and 36 voters or 43.9 percent saying no.
In the other contested local race, the District 3 County Commissioner race, 3,256 voters participated, with 71.5 percent or 2,328 votes for Democrat Rita Johnson, but only 28.5 percent or 928 votes for Republican Michael Renew. Johnson won three of the five precincts that vote in District 3, Second Baptist, Experiment Station and City Park, with Renew winning Boy Scout Headquarters and Carver Road.
Per precinct Johnson had the most votes, 819, and Renew had the least, 100, at Second Baptist. Renew’s best precinct and Johnson’s worst, was Carver Road, where he had 266 votes to her 136.
