Austin Craft topped a two-home run, seven RBI night Monday by hitting a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally Griffin Christian past Dominion Christian, 11-10, at Nix Field in a game with six lead changes.

It was the third win in a row for Griffin Christian (4-1), which hosts the Atlanta Knights today before opening GISA Region 2-AAA play Friday at Tattnall Square in Macon. Dominion (4-1), meanwhile, lost for the first time this season.

“This game said a lot about our character, our fight and our will to win,” said Crusaders head coach Chris Piland. “I always tell the kids to play all seven innings and whoever is left standing is going to win. Today we were the last team left standing.”

Spearheading Griffin Christian’s comeback was the tandem of Jordan Piland and Craft.

Things looked bleak in the top of the first when Dominion (4-1) took advantage of GCHS errors to take a 3-0 lead. However, an RBI single by Piland and a three-run home run by Craft in the bottom of the first highlight a five-run inning that put the home team back on top until the fourth inning when Dominion plated four runs to take a 7-5 lead.

Not to worry. Jordan drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Piland hit a two-run homer to highlight a three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth to put GCHS back on top until Dominion retook the lead with two runs in the fifth and then added to it with another in the sixth.

But, once, again Griffin Christian counter punched when Piland hit an RBI single and Craft followed with a two-run single to account for the game’s final margin.

Craft started and worked five innings, striking out five and allowing nine runs on seven hits. However, reliever Hunter Ott tossed the last two innings for the win, allowing one run on two hits and two walks without a strikeout.

While GCHS catcher Alex Lowry picked several runners off to aid his team’s effort, it was center fielder Kyle Daniel’s home run-saving catch against Dominion’s Hunter Schneider — who had hit home runs in his last two at bats — for the first out of the seventh inning that ranked as the defensive play of the game.
