The Board of Commissioners approved a hazard mitigation grant for the purchase and installation of two warning sirens at the Blalock and Norton fire stations. County Manager William Wilson Jr. said the county had applied for three sirens with the third siren for the Sunny Side City Hall, but the county was only approved for funding of the two.
Wilson explained the locations were chosen based on the path of the April 28, 2011, tornado and previous storms. He said the two fire stations in the western part of the county also allow the sirens to placed on property the county owns.
The grant, requested by the Spalding County Office of Homeland Security, totals $50,219, with $37,664 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, $5,022 from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and a local match of $7,533, which Wilson said had been budgeted for the purchase.
The sirens are in addition to the county’s FirstCall alert system, which will notify those who sign up for the free severe weather alerts. Those who sign up can select which alerts they want to receive and how they want to be notified, with up to five options including home and work phones, cell phones, text and email notifications.
