The Spalding County Board of Commissioners approved a $30,000 budget amendment for the Tax Assessors Office.

The board approved the request from Chief Assessor Tim Whalen for additional assistance from AVTACS for the 2012 tax appeals. County Manager William Wilson said the assessors will be required to be at Board of Equalization hearings, but AVATCS personnel can assist in the Assessor’s Office with appeals before they get to Board of Equalization.

“In all honesty we need to have them retained for another four months, we hope,” Whalen told the commissioners.

“We’re trying to whittle down the number of appeals,” he said, with about 5,000 still pending including 4,000 which can be handled in office, plus another 1,000 for the Board of Equalization.

The county contracted with Larry Griggers’ AVTACS to get the county’s tax assessments up to date a few years ago. The $30,000 will pay for additional AVTACs personnel including Griggers’ wife to continue to come in and help with the appeals.
