No. 1-state Griffin (12-0)lost a coin toss Saturday morning with No. 4-state Apalachee (12-0) to determine home field advantage for Friday’s Class AAAA state quarterfinal-round game.
The two teams met at a neutral site just off I-285 to swap game film. Griffin, which was represented by defensive coordinator Rusty Easom, was allowed to make the call.
Easom called tails. It landed heads.
“He dropped his head and the other two coaches clapped,” ninth-year Griffin head coach Steve DeVoursney said on 1320-AM’s Morning After Show, moments after the fateful flip.
Both teams head into the contest riding 12-game win streaks, Region 8-AAAA champion Apalachee having outscored its opposition by an average of 29-16 and Region 4-AAAA champion Griffin having outscored everyone in its path by an average of 38-5.
The Apalachee Wildcats, which play at R. Harold Harrison Stadium (on campus) in Bethlehem, Ga., about 20 miles north of Social Circle, have topped Starr’s Mill 27-24 in double overtime in the first round and No. 6-state ranked Marist 36-35 in overtime Friday to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time ever in the school’s 10-year history.
Griffin, meanwhile, beat Harris County 34-7 in the opening round and Ware County 42-10 Friday to reach the quarterfinals for the fifth time in the last eight years.
