BARNESVILLE — The Griffin High Bears basketball team ended the first half of the 2012-13 season last weekend with a split in the Lamar County Christmas Tournament, held at Lamar County High.

The Bears defeated Pike County High 63-41 on Dec. 21, as senior center Kelvin Waldon led Griffin with 11 points.

Waldon, affectionately known as “Yao”, also showed a nice shooting touch against Pike, connecting on three 3-point shots in the first tournament game.

The victory upped the Bears’ win streak to 3 straight.

Unfortunately for Griffin, the streak ended the next night as the Upson-Lee Knights, a Region 4-AAAA foe, defeated the Bears 63-58 in Game 2 of the tournament.

Griffin senior guard Tae Mayes, sidelined for much of the first half with a broken finger on his shooting hand, returned from the injury to lead the Bears with 16 points. The iron was unkind to Griffin, as the Bears missed 30 shots from the field, causing them to trail Upson-Lee by as many as 14 points in the first half and trail by 10 points at the half, 34-24.

Griffin (8-4 overall) managed to take a 54-52 lead with little over 3:00 left in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold it and lost the game. The Bears get back into action Friday, Jan. 4 with a road contest against Region 4-AAAA, Division B foe Jonesboro High at 7:30 p.m.

Jonesboro defeated Griffin 52-40 in the first round of the 2011-12 Class AAAA state playoffs last season.
