A three-vehicle wreck Sunday afternoon resulted in the Rev. Greg Burgner, the 49-year-old pastor of Williamson United Methodist Church (WUMC), being flown to Atlanta for treatment of serious injuries.

“It was a three-vehicle wreck in front of Mega Maze on (Georgia) Highway 362,” said trooper J.T. McMillan. “The Griffin Police Department had gotten a call about an unsafe driver in the Broad Street area. He (the unsafe driver) had made it through town when the crash occurred.”

According to McMillan, the incident involved a van, an SUV and a Volkswagen. The only person identified as of press time was Burgner, the driver of the Volkswagen.

“The reckless driver was driving the van. The van clipped the SUV somehow and then hit the Volkswagen head-on,” he said. “The man driving the Volkswagen was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in serious condition. The driver of the van was taken by ambulance to Spalding Regional Medical Center. The SUV occupants were not transported by ambulance. They were transported for treatment by private vehicle.”

Carol Berry, a member of WUMC, said Burgner remained hospitalized Monday in Grady Memorial Hospital with numerous injuries.

“All we know (Monday) is that he has two broken legs, a broken arm, his jaw is broken on both sides and he has broken ribs — he’s pretty broken up. He has some fluid on his lungs, but the main thing they’re worried about today is that he has some swelling on his brain,” Berry said Monday afternoon. “They are giving him medication to keep him sedated, but he is responsive. He obviously can’t talk because of his jaw, but he can respond by moving his hand.”

While concerned about Burgner and his family, Berry said church members are hopeful he will fully recover.

“It’s a comfort that he’s alive and it’s a comfort that he’s in the trauma unit at Grady, which is exactly where he needs to be to receive the best possible care,” she said.

McMillan said the investigation into the wreck is ongoing and that charges are “probably pending.”
