Local high school teams continue to compete in holiday basketball tournaments this week.

The Spalding High girls basketball team used a 47-42 win against Manchester on Thursday to work its way into the title game of the Meriwether Tournament at 7 p.m. today against Greenville.

Thursday’s win was the third in a row for the Chad Hubbard-coached Lady Jags (7-4) . The Lady Jags, which matched their longest win streak of the season with Thursday’s win, can surpass it with a victory tonight.

In the same tournament, the Spalding High boys fell to Taylor County on Thursday to fall into a consolation-round game 4 p.m., today. The Kemo Spear-coached Jags (5-4) have lost two in a row since the Christmas break started.

Elsewhere, the Griffin Christian basketball teams were playing in a tournament Friday and today at The Heritage School in Newnan. Both the girls and boys teams were scheduled to face the host team in late games Friday before wrapping up the tournament with games at 1 p.m., and 2:30 p.m., respectively, today against Trinity Christian-Sharpsburg.

Friday’s action ended a 10-day hiatus for Griffin Christian which last played on Dec. 18 at Arlington. The Crusaders (7-5) were looking to get back in the win column after losing 83-70 to Arlington. The Lady Crusaders (6-5), meanwhile, were also looking to get back in the win column after having a season-best three-game win streak snapped 76-27 by Arlington.

Earlier this holiday season, the Griffin High teams split in a tournament Dec. 21-22 at Lamar County. The Griffin Bears (8-4) upped their win streak to three in a row with a 63-41 win against Pike County in the opener before ending the tournament with a 63-58 loss to archrival Upson-Lee.

The Griffin Lady Bears (6-6), meanwhile, had a three-game win streak snapped 53-34 to Pike in the opener before rallying to top region foe Upson-Lee 43-39 in the tournament-ending game.

All local teams will be back in action Jan. 4 in regular-season play.
